This one should be no exception.

The beans are on the stove complete with ham hock in the pot, 'cause really, you can't make a proper pot of beans without a ham hock.

cornbread

ham

boiled cabbage (with a half dollar in the pot)

family traditions dictates ham, so you'll be rootin forward all year; and cabbage, so you'll have all the money you need.

Do you and/or your family have NY dinner traditions?

Some form of pork and cabbage here too, but I never knew the backstory.

One year when I was young, I asked my mom if gran would be frying chicken for NY dinner. Her reaction was a gasp and an "oh no honey you don't want to be scratchin backward all year!"

We eat smoked sausage and sauerkraut. I jumped the gun and made it last week, too, but that's okay because it's so yummy. I cook bits of bacon in a pan, sauté onions, then combine with the sausage and kraut and let it simmer all day.

After reading your post, I think I'm going to do a pot of ham and beans, too. Fried potatoes and cornbread on the side.

Damn, I'm hungry now.

I am too!

But these beans won't be done for a few more hours. :(

Someone's gonna be gassy. ;)

Hambone, dear. Hamhocks are for clueless posers with no clue and no taste. You spell CHITTERLINGS 'CHITTLINS' doncha. I knew it.

Technically speaking, we are both right as I used a hock with a bit of the shank.

Ain't it always chittlins?

p.s. tsp of ginger

It was all that moonshine.
For medicinal purposes only, of course.

ya gotta respect a woman who can make her own lye soap, keep Jethro fed, and still put out a fine batch o' shine.

Did you roast that ham hock or an hour and a half, first? Adds a bit more flavor...

we usually have a boiled dinner. this year we're changing it up some having non-traditional sides that my son-in-law has suggested bro!

Stew

I didn't, but i will the next time I have one to cook with.

I usually roast the smoked ham hock in the same pot that everything will be cooked in. After roasting, I deglaze the pot to keep all the goodness from the ham hock.

Often, smoked turkey drummettes are substituted for the pork.

Recuperate. That's what we do every yr. Always bring the new yr with a huge celebration, so its a lazy day in our house the next day.
