Song Lyrics That Are Important To You

"Everyone thinks that we're perfect... Please don't let them look through the curtains..." Dollhouse ~Melanie Martinez

"There's no tornado that can stop us now!"
Yellow Brick Road Song ~Iyeoka ft. B. Cap

"But it’s all we want, and all that we’re fighting for, though it’s not paradise..." Paradise ~Within Temptation~

"Iris"

And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't wanna go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
When sooner or later it's over
I just don't wanna miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

John Hiatt is one of my favorite songwriters. His skills are overlooked because it's other artists who have the bigger hits with the songs he wrote.

For example he wrote 'A Thing Called Love' which was a big hit for Bonnie Raitt and 'Riding With The King' which BB King and Eric Clapton made popular.

There are so many that fit this description, but Haitt is definitely a favorite of mine, too. Loved "Crossing Muddy Waters", no drums, just guitar.

David Rodriguez, Eric Taylor, Townes. Lyle Lovett did a real service to songwriters when he put out "Step Inside This House."

Since you mentioned Bonnie Raitt, her version of Larry John McNally's "Nobody's Girl" is one I have to replay about six times every time it comes up in the rotation. Reminds me of my one-true-(lost)-love.

NOBODY'S GIRL

She don't need anybody to tell her she's pretty.
She's heard it every single day of her life.
He's got to wonder what she sees in him
When there's so many others standing in line.

She gives herself to him, but he's still on the ootside.
She's alone in this world, She's nobody's girl.
She's nobody's girl.

She shows up at this doorstep in the middle of the night,
Then she disappears for weeks at a time.
Just enough to keep him wanting more
But never is he satisfied.

And he's left to pick up the pieces, wondering what does he do this for.
She's off in her own little world, She's nobody's girl.
She's nobody's girl.

He says "Before I met her, I didn't love nothin.'
I could take it or leave it, that was okay,
She brings out a want in me
For things I didn't even know that I need."

She does anything she wants, anytime she wants to,
With anyone, you know, she wants it all.
Still she gets all upset over the least little thing,
Man, you hurt her, it makes you feel so small.

And she's a walking contradiction,
But I ache for her inside.
She's fragile like a string of pearls.
She's nobody's girl.

She's fragile like a string of pearls.
She's nobody's girl.
She's nobody's girl.
She's nobody's girl.

Both of which were great songs when he did them originally. Ditto for 'Drive South', which Suzy Boggus recorded afterwards.

To say that Hiatt is a favourite of mine is to way undersell his importance. I never miss a chance to see him live.

This is one of my all-time favourites:

"Through Your Hands"

You were dreaming on a park bench
'Bout a broad highway somewhere
When the music from the carillon
Seemed to hurl your heart out there
Past the scientific darkness
Past the fireflies that float
To an angel bending down
To wrap you in her warmest coat

[Chorus:]
And you ask, "What am I not doing?"
She says "Your voice cannot command.
In time, you will move mountains,
And it will come through your hands."

Still you argue for an option
Still you angle for your case
Like you wouldn't know a burning bush
If it blew up in your face
Yeah, we scheme about the future
And we dream about the past
When just a simple reaching out
Might build a bridge that lasts

[Chorus]

So whatever your hands find to do
You must do with all your heart
There are thoughts enough
To blow men's minds and tear great worlds apart

There's a healing touch to find you
On that broad highway somewhere
To lift you high
As music flying
Through the angel's hair.

Don't ask what you are not doing
Because your voice cannot command
In time we will move mountains
And it will come through your hands

Drive South is a great tune . . . I'll search for and listen to this one.

Not to beat a dead horse with all this Hiatt music, but another one of his that really strikes a personal chord with me is Cherry Red

There are thirty years now between my younger days when I did drive a red corvette accompanied by pretty women. Now I am older and my hair is turning gray and I only have fond memories of those good days, The Kingsmen, Daddy Roth and fun women.

"Cherry Red"

I was thinking back to the first time we met
Over plangent chords in a sad vignette
You were waving goodbye in a cherry red corvette
And your lips were too
Cherry red that is, with the sky so blue
It was almost mean and your eyes were too
So blue that is, now I am too
And my heart burns cherry red for you

. . . .

Now if I was young, I might track you down
But this old picture is all I found
Now my bones are shakin', my teeth are ground down
And my heart burns cherry red for you

Now my heart burns cherry red for you
Like a fire of beech wood, the sun don't like it
But you get some cut, one match will strike it
And the embers glow till the wee small hours
When the old seems almost new
That's when my heart burns cherry red
That's when my heart burns cherry red
That's when my heart burns cherry red for you

The Script

"If You Ever Come Back"

If you're standing with your suitcase
But you can't step on the train
Everything's the way that you left it
I still haven't slept yet

And if you're covering your face now
But you just can't hide the pain
Still setting two plates on the counter but eating without you

If the truth is you're a liar
Then just say that you're okay
I'm sleeping on your side of the bed
Goin' out of my head now

And if you're out there trying to move on
But something pulls you back again
I'm sitting here trying to persuade you like you're in the same room

And I wish you could give me the cold shoulder
And I wish you could still give me a hard time
And I wish I could still wish it was over
But even if wishing is a waste of time
Even if I never cross your mind

I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back if you ever come back now
Oh if you ever come back if you ever come back

Now they say I'm wasting my time
'Cause you're never comin' home
But they used to say the world was flat
But how wrong was that now?

And by leavin' my door open
I'm riskin' everything I own
There's nothing I can lose in a break-in that you haven't taken

And I wish you could give me the cold shoulder
And I wish you can still give me a hard time
And I wish I could still wish it was over
But even if wishing is a waste of time
Even if I never cross your mind

I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now
Oh, if you ever come back, if you ever come back

If it's the fighting you remember or the little things you miss
I know you're out there somewhere so just remember this
If it's the fighting you remember or the little things you miss
Oh just remember this, oh just remember this

I'll leave the door on the latch
If you ever come back, if you ever come back
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back
There'll be a smile on my face and the kettle on
And it will be just like you were never gone
There'll be a light in the hall and the key under the mat
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now
Oh, if you ever come back, if you ever come back

And it will be just like you were never gone
And it will be just like you were never gone
And it will be just like you were never gone
If you ever come back, if you ever come back now

I'll add another Patty Griffin tune. I love what Emmylou Harris did with it.

"One Big Love"

Let's take a ride to the seaside
We can go out swimming in the high tide
Just wear your shorts and your long hair
Don't forget the lawn chair
Everybody's gone to the movies
Everybody's gone and its groovy
They went to the one about the big war
I didn't, I'd seen it before

I guess I'm taking my chances
Giving up the ring throwing in the gloves
I guess I'm taking my chances
Trading in my things for a couple wings
on a little white dove
And one big love, one big love

Everybody do like a Monkey
If you want to go on and be funky
No need to talk like a hero
Talk a walk count down to zero
No sense defending your honor
Just go on and kiss him if you wanna
Everything before is gone or is going somewhere

I guess I'm taking my chances
Giving up the ring throwing in the gloves
I guess I'm taking my chances
Trading in my things for a couple wings on a
Little white dove
And one big love, one big love
I don't know where we are
And I don't care
And now we're out of gas
And riding on air
And one big love, one big love

Snow Patrol and Martha Wainwright

Set the Fire to the Third Bar

I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms, and state lines
The distance from 'A' to where you'd be
It's only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place where I'd find your face
My fingers in creases of distant dark places

I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science

Their words mostly noises
Ghosts with just voices
Your words in my memory
Are like music to me

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms

After I have travelled so far
We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
Until exhausted, close our eyelids
And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can't keep in

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

I'm miles from where you are,
I lay down on the cold ground
and I, I pray that something picks me up
and sets me down in your warm arms

I Try -- Macy Gray

Games, changes and fears
When will they go from here
When will they stop
I believe that fate has brought us here
And we should be together babe
But we're not
I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'

[Chorus]
I try to say goodbye and I choke
Try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not here

I may appear to be free
But I'm just a prisoner of your love
And I may seem all right and smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front
Just a front, hey
I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll try to keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'

[Chorus]

Here is my confession
May I be your possession
Boy, I need your touch
Your love, kisses and such
With all my might I try
But this I can't deny
Deny

I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
(but I'm dreaming of you babe)
And I'll keep my cool, but I'm fiendin'

[Chorus]

"Feels Like Rain"
John Hiatt

Down here the river meets the sea
And in the sticky heat I feel ya' open up to me
Love comes out of nowhere baby, like a hurricane
And it feels like rain

Underneath the stars lying next to you
Wondering who you are baby
How do you do?
When the clouds blow in across the moon
And the wind howls out your name
Feels like rain

We'll never make that bridge tonight
Across lake Ponchartrain
Feel like rain

Batten down the hatches
But keep your heart out on your sleeve
A little bit of stormy weather, that's no cause for us to leave
Just stay here baby, in my arms
Let it wash away the pain
Feels like rain

"Blues Can't Even Find Me"
John Hiatt

World is closin' in on me
Don't know what to do
Can't see the big picture anymore
If there's even one to view

Wife keeps pushin' buttons
Spend all day starin' at a little screen
I'm feelin' invisible
The blues can't even find me

AEROSMITH
Angel Lyrics

I'm alone
Yeah, I don't know if I can face the night
I'm in tears and the cryin' that I do is for you
I want your love - Let's breaks the walls between us
Don't make it tough - I'll put away my pride
Enough's enough I've suffered and I've seen the light

[Chorus:]
Baby
You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
You're my angel
Come and make it all right

Don't know what I'm gonna do
About this feeling inside
Yes it's true - Loneliness took me for a ride
Without your love - I'm nothing but a beggar
Without your love - a dog without a bone
What can I do? I'm sleeping in this bed alone

[Chorus]
Baby
You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
You're my angel
Come and make it alright
Come and save me tonight

You're the reason I live
You're the reason I die
You're the reason I give
When I break down and cry
Don't need no reason why

Baby, Baby, Baby
[Chorus]

You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
You're my angel
Come and make it alright
You're my angel
Come and save me tonight
You're my angel
Come and take me alright
Come and save me tonight x5

I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted

God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean

Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens

Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Never settle for the path of least resistance

Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin'

Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth makin'

Don't let some Hellbent heart leave you bitter

When you come close to sellin' out, reconsider

Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance (Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along)

I hope you dance

I hope you dance (Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder)

I hope you dance (Where those years have gone?)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean

Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens

Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

"Nothing ever came from a life that was a simple one
So pull yourself together girl and have a little fun.."

~Devil's Dance Floor by Flogging Molly

Don't think 'cos I understand I care,
Don't think 'cos we're talking, we're friends

- 6 Underground, Sneaker Pimps

(lyrics by Bobby Caldwell)

I guess you wonder where I've been
I searched to find a love within
I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can't let go

My friends wonder what is wrong with me
Well, I'm in a daze from your love, you see
I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can't let go

Some people go around the world for love
And they may never find what they dream of
What you won't do, you do for love

You tried everything but you don't give up
In my world only you make me do
For love what I would not do

My friends wonder what is wrong with me
Well, I'm in a daze from your love, you see
I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you and I can't let go

I know I only want the best, it's true
I can't believe the things I do for you
What you won't do, you do for love

You've tried everything but you won't give up
In my world, only you make me do
For love what I would not do

Make me do for love what I would not do
Make me do for love what I would not do
Make me do for love what I would not do

Simple Man

Song by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Boy, don't you worry.
You'll find yourself.
Follow your heart,
And nothing else.
You can do this,
If you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Baby, be a simple kind of man.
Oh won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man

The lyrics in my sig.

Another song called Weak, by Skunk Anansie says:

"If I opened my heart,
there'd be no space for air!
Cause I wanted you...

Weak as I am, no tears for you
Weak as I am, no tears for you
Deep as I am, I'm no ones fool
Weak as I am!

In this tainted soul
In this weak young heart
Am I too much for you?!"

It ironically is the song I use to heal for the breakup with the man who introduced me to the song in the first place. Very powerful hold over me, this song.

(The Dublin band) The Script's Before the Worst Everything. It makes me think of my ex, who is Irish too. He likes these guys, and the song is very cool, it's soulful, it's folky, and The Script love to talk about Ireland. There are more lyrics, but these really really really do it for me. It got me so bad that I even wrote "Let's try to take it back before it all wrong!" on my wall and pissed my mother off. I am a bit healed and painted over it  The song says:

"It's been a while since the two of us talked
About a week since the day that you walked
Knowing things would never be the same
With your empty heart and mine full of pain
So explain to me, how it came to this
Take it back to the night we kissed
It was Dublin city on a Friday night
With vodkas and coke, I was Guinness all night

We were sitting with our backs against the world
Saying things that we thought but never heard
Oh, who would have thought it would end up like this?
Where everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on
Is trying to take it back before it all went wrong

Before the worst, before we met
Before our hearts decide
It's time to love again
Before too late, before too long
Let's try to take it back
Before it all went wrong

There was a time, that we'd stay up all night
Best friends, yeah, talking 'til the daylight
Took the joys alongside the pain
With not much to lose but so much to gain
Are you hearing me? 'Cause I don't wanna miss,
That you would drift on memory bliss
It was Grafton Street on a rainy night
I was down on one knee and you were mine for life."

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

The snow's comin' down
(Christmas)
I'm watchin' it fall
(Christmas)
Lots of people around
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home

The church bells in town
(Christmas)
Are ringing in song
(Christmas)
Full of happy sounds
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home

They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

Pretty lights on the tree
(Christmas)
I'm watching them shine
(Christmas)
You should be here with me
(Christmas)
Baby, please come home

They're singing "Deck The Halls"
But it's not like Christmas at all
'Cause I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

If there was a way
(Christmas)
I'd hold back this tear
(Christmas)
But it's Christmas day

Please
(Please)
Please
(Please)
Please
(Please)
Please

Baby please come home
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
(Christmas)
Baby please come home, oh yeah yeah
-----

I miss you every day.

Stay with me Sam Smith

Guess it's true
I'm not good
At a one night stand
But I still need love
Cos I'm just a man
These nights never seem to go to plan
I don't want you to leave
Will you hold my hand

Oh won't you
Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me

Why am I so emotional?
No it's not a good look
Gain some self control
Deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me
So it doesn't hurt

Oh won't you

Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me

Oh won't you
Stay with me
Cos you're
All I need
This ain't love
It's clear to see
But darling
Stay with me

I love this thread. Song lyrics are my Bible. Thank you, Munky :)

John Hiatt? Emmylou Harris? Patty Griffin? Yes PLEASE

*enters her Grateful Dead reverie.....

Flight of the seabirds
Scattered like lost words,
Wheel to the storm and fly.

Fare thee well now, let your life proceed by it's own design.
Nothing to tell now, let the words be yours, I'm done with mine......

Another, for my man. <3

JEWEL

Foolish Games

You took your coat off and stood in the rain,
You're always crazy like that.
And I watched from my window,
Always felt I was outside looking in on you.
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair,
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care.
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather.

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Well in case you failed to notice,
In case you failed to see,
This is my heart bleeding before you,
This is me down on my knees, and...

[Chorus]
These foolish games are tearing me apart,
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart.
You're breaking my heart.
You're always brilliant in the morning,
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee.
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you.
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar.
You'd teach me of honest things,
Things that were daring, things that were clean.
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean.
I hid my soiled hands behind my back.
Somewhere along the line, I must've gone
Off track with you.

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else,
Somebody who gave a damn,
Somebody more like myself.

[Chorus]
You took your coat off,
Stood in the rain,
You're always crazy like that.

The best part about Jewel is that her lyrics stand alone-- even without the music. You can read them as poetry.

You ever read her book of poems?

I love Jewel.
And Alanis.
And Bjork.

I was an odd child growing up. Because I had a good taste in music, while others pretended to care about fucking bitches. And getting money.
Whatever that phase was about :)

And yes. She's one of my favourite human beings- along with Shel Silverstein. :)

For all my exes. It clearly was your loss. <3

I want you to know
That I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but
The best for you both.

An older version of me
Is she perverted like me?
Would she go down on you in a theatre?
Does she speak eloquently?
And would she have your baby?
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother.

'Cause the love that you gave, that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died? 'til you die
But you're still alive.

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know.

You seem very well
Things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well
I thought you should know.

Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity?
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
And Are you thinking of me when you fuck her?

'Cause the love that you gave, that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died? 'til you die
But you're still alive.

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know.

'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes
(And you know it)
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it
Well, can you feel it?

Well, I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

That I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know.
