What ever happened to them?

Last weekend I was up in a little community by the name of Jemez Springs listening to a blue grass band and happened upon a young fellow that was from Los Alamos. One thing led to another and it turned out that he was a teen when I was working there and, having more energy than sense, was managing a band.

I mentioned that fact and he asked, "Whatever happened to them?"

Well they've all gone their separate ways just as I have and if ever you have the notion to manage a band....................don't.

We're all still in touch to one degree or another (isn't Facebook fascinating?).

So, here was the lineup;

Floyd Evans - lead vocals
David Evans (Yes, they're brothers) - lead guitar, vocals
Oscar Dorta - drums, vocals
Tom McGill - rhythm guitar
Rudy Lovato - bass, vocals

We were making money, lots of money. I was writing contracts for more money than bands that are almost as good are making today. But no matter, that was never enough. And when they weren't on my case they were on each others.

So what did happen to them?

Floyd

Floyd died some years ago in Costa Rica. He always had a yen for Latin women and the Latin life style. He died where he wanted to be.

Floyd was an outstanding singer, there are still some U-Tube vids of him in the late 60's with his band of the time 'Hemlock' sitting out there. So in that respect Floyd lives on.

He was auditioned to sing harmony with Mama Cass and the finalists were himself and Dave Mason. Cass choose Floyd and then had a ham sandwich. Floyd never got over that. On such twists of fate lives are changed.

Oscar Dorta

Oscar is a Cuban with that innate sense of rhythm.

Oscar was the most aggressive of the band members as far as hitting the big time and my biggest pain in the ass.

He hit the national circuit with a band called "Skin Trade" and had a minor hit with a song called "Virus." He's moved on and has a new project with a band named "United States of Rock" (All on U-Tube) Obviously the new project is going through some personal changes.

BTW, Oscar was the replacement drummer for Wild Cherry.

First name was 'White Rock.' The second was 'Silque.'

Tom McGill

Tom went on to play rhythm for a house band in Las Vegas. Laid back guy with a bottomless pit for a stomach at the time. I watched him decimate half of a 24lb Turkey at my T'giving table.

Tom is now doing animation/music videos, also on U-tube under the name of Thomas Paul McGill. He's doing it for his own amusement, but that's Tom.

Rudy Lovato

Rudy was a trip. One of the most versatile bass players I've ever met. And he had this thing about blowing spit bubbles when it was a boring song. It kept those not dancing amused.

Rudy is still living in N. New Mexico with his 4th, 5th, or 6th wife (I no longer ask). Rudy is one of those guys that should have never married.

Dave Evans

Dave is/was the best musician of the group. He plays guitar (as I mentioned), lap steel, pedal steel and now synth. He warms up playing Steely Dan and/or Jeff Beck. Steeped in Southern Baptist up bringing Dave was always feeling guilty about everything to do with notoriety. The closer he gets to success, the harder he runs away

After 20 years his name is still known here in NM and still talked about. Now he's a local guitar hero in S. FL.

He should have hooked up as a studio player long ago.
