(Reuters) - A U.S. journalist and a South African teacher held by al Qaeda militants in Yemen were killed alongside 10 of their captors during a rescue attempt by U.S. and Yemeni forces, senior officials said on Saturday.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said al Qaeda militants killed Luke Somers, 33, and another foreign national hostage during the rescue operation, which he said was only approved because of information that their lives were at imminent risk.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is seen by Washington as one of the movement's most dangerous branches, and it has worked with the Yemeni government and via drone strikes to attack its leadership in southern and eastern parts of Yemen.

"The callous disregard for Luke's life is more proof of the depths of AQAP's depravity, and further reason why the world must never cease in seeking to defeat their evil ideology," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement.

He said he had authorized the attempted rescue and said the United States would "spare no effort to use all of its military, intelligence and diplomatic capabilities to bring Americans home safely, wherever they are located".

Somers was moved from the scene of the rescue attempt but died later from his wounds, a senior official in the Yemeni president's office said.

Relief group Gift of the Givers said South African teacher Pierre Korkie was killed in the operation.

I suspect we'll see more such bait from the Chief in the days ahead, one last hurrah before embarkin' on that Trail Of Tears 2015 to the political wastelands.

He had a good run here, but the Age of Wingnuts draws to an inexorable close here on the General Board.

Nonetheless, he will not be missed by many.

Fifty-two American diplomats and military officials were held captive for more than a year by a group of Islamist students who supported the Iranian revolution. The hostages were released on Jan. 20, 1981, just minutes after Reagan was sworn in as president.

In the spring of 1980, Carter ordered a helicopter rescue attempt — one that ended disastrously and left an indelible scar on his presidency. Two of the eight helicopters developed problems on the way to a remote desert landing spot and had to turn back; a third had a hydraulic problem after landing. Carter canceled the mission but during the withdrawal, a helicopter collided with a C-130 transport plane, resulting in eight deaths.
 
Some military missions are always high risk.

It is great when they succeed, but the odds of complete success are not good. If the danger to the hostages was 'imminent', it was worth an attempt at rescue.

Those who took part should be thanked, and those who took the decision to make the attempt should not be criticised - unless the critics know all the factors that had to be considered.

I just want to see if I'm getting this right:

Two people not from the place they were at went to the place they were at, which is a very notoriously dangerous place, then they got killed.

If they didn't get killed, someone would have taken the credit.

If since they did get killed, that same someone took the credit.

?

This sounds a lot like a human sacrifice....
