Does the minimum wage kill jobs?

Here's a video of Economist Peter Schiff talking about Henry Ford in front of a Congressional committee:

Oh, a crazy person. And the Free Market hasn't been allowed to exist pretty much anywhere in so long that speaking about it is a little bit like talking about how many people we could feed if there were still herds of Wooly Mammoths wandering around.

The idea that Henry Ford paied the most because the government wasn't in the way is fucking absurd. As was pointed out several times in this thread he had to fight his shareholders repeatedly over the idea that his workers should be the best paid in the world. That wasn't about minimal government it was about that one in a million genuine good guy in a position to do something and lead. You don't see those kinds of people very often.

We wouldn't even HAVE a minimum wage in the first goddamn place if the average business owner was paying a living wage out of the kindness of their hearts (or in the case of Ford the belief that your workers should be able to afford the product they work on which could if you want be interpretted as long term greed instead of short term greed)

If a worker wants more money they should work harder, get more education, learn skills.
Demanding to be paid more just because you want more is much like those who live on govt. benefits. They breathe so the rest of the world should support them, they deserve it.

You say a car worker is doing nothing if he wants a higher wage?

"Everybody's got the right to go too well following obtaining conditions." Bernd Pietschesrieder, (former CEO of BMW and Volkswagen)

Everyone wants a higher wage.
There are other ways to get it rather than by doing nothing to deserve it.

Looks like Jen has a new alt.

Of course that's a buncha crap.. what about all those with degrees out of work, many of whom are "overqualified"?

I've spent nearly 20 years learning and getting better at my trade... because it's not a formal college education there are some, like Jen who think we should work for nothing....never mind the fact that there are very few, if any, eggheads that could even begin to do what I do, or what other skilled tradesman do.

Unfortunately, too many ignorant people have bought into the bs that worker=bad.. labor costs = drag on a company... when in fact, it's often the worker that MAKES that company money.

It started with the right to work crap in the south and has permeated more and more of our society...add to that the more bullshit that America needs to be competitive in the global economy to survive and you have companies exploiting overseas labor at the expense of the American worker...

I agree with Sean, it's unfortunate that we need a minimum wage.. too much greed and unbridled capitalism has left a massive income inequality gap... and for some reason, people on here think that's somehow a good thing.

Idiots.

Sort of funny.
You ask a question then answer it yourself.
Then don't like the answer.

Afraid of standing to your position?

What you don't get is that wages are prices, and prices are not made for justice. They're made out of the markets driven forces: offers and demands. If nobody's working for THAT wage, the car manufacturer has to increase it.

So take your survival tips and put it in your arse. At least, somebody's got to do the work you're too lazy for.

It is always the worker who makes the company money. Who do you think makes the product?

Many of the people with degree that are out of work have degrees that are worthless. Who wants to hire a person who has a degree that has nothing to do with the job offered? Might as well hire the first person off the street that comes by.
If they are over qualified they should be working in a job that needs their qualifications. If they are not they have no one other than themselves to blame.

If you have really spent any time getting better at your trade you should have a good job that uses your efforts. If you just think you have spent years getting better at your trade maybe you should take another good look at how much you have actually improved.

Tell that to the workers. When a company cannot hire workers for what they want to pay they will increase the pay. As long as there are people willing to work for what the company pays you will have to work more and work smarter to get additional pay.

Workers working. But I don't think you'll ever get that.

Not mandatory.

You get higher pay if you can demand it. It's that simple.

You can demand all you want. If the company does not agree you will just have to control your spending.

You are living in the past.
Unions are a thing of the past.
Have you noticed how the membership has dropped?
People began to notice the union was much worse than the company.

People noticed no such thing. What happened was Reagan broke the unions in this country and wages have stagnated ever since. Member ship dropped because the power of the union was broken. You want things to start getting better, get the unions back and fight like hell when someones suggests we do anything else. Or don't complain about th estate of affairs.

I have belonged to a union before.
The last time I worked for one I tried for 5 years to get out of it.
When I found out it was impossible to get out of the union I quit the job and went somewhere there wasn't a union.
I would like to be the person who gets to decide if I want to join a union.
When they remove that choice I will go somewhere else.

Unfortunately there are things that you cannot be allowed to choose becaues you will choose wrong.

Well, it's called a union because its goal is to unite the workers in the fight for higher wages.

Off course, that's too much for you egoistic brick.

If you can get a higher wage without a union - be happy, as long as you've got it.

and if you don't like the pay, find a new fucking job
