I was discussing the idea of a Victorian thread with somebody the other day, and we gradually realized that it might be so much more than just one thread, destined to be lost among the thousands of others. At first we thought it might be a meta-thread, and then it expanded into, essentially, a whole new (though small) website.
The personals section would have accomplished governesses looking for kind gentlemen with land in Shropshire (chaperoned meetings a must).
The Amateur pics would be sepia and in costume, with perhaps the slow reveal of a shapely ankle to those patient enough to wait until the end of the thread.
The BDSM section would have discreet enquiries about special requests in Parisian brothels, and the purchase of appropriate floggers and horsewhips from reliable suppliers.
The GLBT threads would discuss the forthcoming Oscar Wilde trial, Greek relationships, Sappho and Lesbos...
Anyway, I am sure the idea is clear. There are few sections of the current website that could not, with sufficient imagination, be transported back 120 years or so, to the fine decadent days of that glorious era. But in order for it to happen we would need several things.
First and foremost - Manu and Laurel's permission, without which it would have to remain always a pipe-dream. Obviously it would give full acknowledgement to its older, bigger sister site on the front page - obviously it would be far smaller - obviously it would not seek to make any money, though if it did somehow (vintage and cosplayer stuff, perhaps, steampunk, etc?) it could be remitted straight back here. A spin-off, in short, rather than a rival, and a labour of love. But this is their creation, and we would never seek to do anything without their express permission.
Second - the skills of the Literotica boards. We would need graphic designers, website managers, coders, volunteer mods, alpha and beta testers, etc, etc. I worked in web design but briefly and 13 years ago which, in web terms, is about five generations, I know. I am under no illusions that I could do this alone, or even with a handful of people.
But it does seem as if the time is right to merge the healthy and still growing trend for vintage/steampunk with erotica. There are literally thousands of sites out there that deal with crockery, clothes, furniture, etc, but only a tiny handful that focus on Victorian sexual identity - and none remotely participative like Lit.
So what we are seeking here is, firstly, to simply seed the idea - to throw it out there and get some initial and perhaps even some considered responses. Next, we would like ideas for how it might work, because of course it would not, for a variety of reasons, be a simple facsimile of the current site which grew organically over so many years. Third, it is an appeal for volunteers with skills and some time, who would be willing and able to contribute to the project.
So what do you say, assembled Litsters, perverts, kinksters, writers and readers, men, women and every shade in between? Will you join with us to build a brighter, sexier, sepia yesterday?
