And if so, how do they keep them alive?

Also, why is it such a big deal to open one?

Prescient questions, all.

I have only ever seen them sold in Styrofoam containers.

Looking much like your avatar, come to think of it.

There's a gas station close by that sells worms in a can out of a vending machine.

The cans are shaped liked coke cans

At a place I used to purchase worms, they kept them in dryer lint. The real dryer lint, not the message board...

Here they sell them in tupperware, which makes me think that worms don't need to breath to live.

If I can recall, they breathe through their skin, so provided the soil they are kept in within the container is moist, they can still breathe.

I used to go out and get night crawlers during rain storms. Id have a coffee can prepared with a mixture or rich dark earth, dead leaves and a scoop or 2 of coffee grinds. As long as the mixture is damp and kept in cool dark place they remained lively. They would last several days as long as the soil remained damp and not too cold or hot.

Yes. They poke holes in the lid so they can breath. When I was a kid they use to sell them in old coffee ground containers. Now they have the Styrofoam things. Still can shaped. XD

Opening a can of crickets would be way worse. They'll jump and run and escape everywhere.

The problem with crickets is no matter what the pet store guy says if your iguanas are used to lettuce and monkey chow they may very well be to goddamn lazy to chase crickets. They'll then infest your house feeding off. . .what ever it is they've been eating, find a spot on the roof you can't get and taunt you until you start throwing shit.

How do worms grow in a can if that can is completely hermetically sealed?

Don't fresh water fish much I'm guessing...

As long as they are chilled...no problem.

When they warm up...minor horror film material and as for sticking a hook through them, well!

I'm Sorry! (LOL!)

Sounds like a freaking nightmare. I was raised out in the sticks and crickets ,tree frogs, bullfrogs & screech owls used to make my nights hell!

See, I like those sounds. It's the white noise of sleepy time.
