The technologically illiterate in power

A private citizen is probably a guilty citizen.

Maybe we should also outlaw curtains and shades... ;)

To me it's not even about privacy in relation to the government, that's a legitimate conversation.

I have no idea what it is to you. As we see so often a lot of posters omit that information so that when others appear to say what they think, they can go after them and not have to fight a two-front battle.

To me, it is Holder admitting by default that the government gets nervous any time we hide something from it, for since government is pure and good, the motivations must be nefarious for no one would ever use the government to harass citizens in their rights to assembly and speech, especially in the political sense.

No, secrecy and privacy always indicate criminality.

The 4th Amendment was as poorly thought out as the 2nd.

;) ;)

Hi Mr. Tree, argumentative and grumpy today :)

How are you?

If you're not doing anything wrong, why do you care?

Radar detectors have been illegal here in VA for years and nobody notices the government's radar beams unless they're going 12 or more over the posted speed limit.

Where's the complaint about blanketing everyone with high intensity radio waves in order to go after the few who might be disobeying the law? Where's the outrage over being targeted by lasers for the same purpose?

As with the the roads, Government (the FCC) allocated the airwaves and they have a duty to protect them from abusers.

Selective Outrage.

It is nothing more than a presumption of guilt by the government.

At the rate things are going the internet is going to be destroyed by government, not just the US government, all governments. Firewalls will exist at every national border creating national 'islands' of information.

The title of the thread and Holder's proposal in the article point to what it is to me.

Aside from the naivete of that question, technological back doors are often exploited by criminals.
Assuming you unreservedly trust the government, do you also unreservedly trust criminals?

Additionally, your house can't be legally searched without your permission or a warrant, why should your electronic devices be any different?

I am overwhelmed by the lack of civil Libertarianism which was in full throat during the Bush years...

;) ;)

Maybe because they assume that in a Lerneresque fashion, it is a tool to use on the TEA Party (but not me).

As a government, any government, strives to centralize more and more power unto itself it tends to identify those who oppose that centralization of power as 'enemies' to be feared and forcefully dealt with as much, and in some cases more so, than external threats to the nation. It's the very nature of government and power.

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." G. Washington

That you can even be arsed to make pics like that.

Anyway, this is a surprise to anyone? The Obama admin has not exactly been champions of privacy, digital or other.

No, not a surprise. Has any administration been a champion of privacy in recent times?

I am, though, always surprised at the number of people who don't see it as an issue.
