A much better attitude, I agree. I am somewhat being tongue in cheek in mocking racial fetish threads, though I admit that the lure of the exotic is a very human trait. I was more referring to human fetishism as a fact, regrettable though it may be. It seems very hard for humans to escape. We might bemoan the tendency to turn race into a kink, but people are drawn to the less familiar and more mysterious, which other races are to them if they have limited experience. In other words, the more you're exposed to a variety of people regardless of race, the more it becomes old news. Certainly was true of me once I left West Virginia and saw a lot more people of a lot different races. After a while, it's old hat. Kind of like....so what?

That doesn't keep me from exploring it in stories, because characters, like people, are human and have deep human flaws.

I don't think something is human nature if you have to teach it. Kids aren't born thinking other people are different, they develop it from racist parents and societies. Humans aren't born with the desire to other, and when they're very young they don't even understand it. They'll call bullshit on it. But they start to absorb that shit and gain it by adulthood. It's not something bred into them, it's something taught to them. Karmaloff-Smithians have done experiments that prove that very young children not only can't tell different races apart, they'll find a human face and connect with it in pretty much anything. That's why we find stories, rare tho they may be of human children imprinting on other animals (being raised by wolves and such). We simply aren't designed to compartmentalize as infants. So... yeah. Not human nature. You have to teach fetishization. Human nature is to judge people entirely by what they have to offer you because you have infantile egocentrism and see yourself as the center of your own douchebag universe.
