...but the US airwave police - the Federal Communications Commission - evidently believes it's righteous to return us to the days of yesteryear when anyone actually bought that they had any constitutional right at all to punish anyone for free speech.

For today the FCC is considering heroically protecting all our virtues once more by punishing anyone and any concern that has the audaciousness to employ, over our nation's airwaves, the word...

I was always under the impression that the seven forbidden words were, literally, all four letter words: shit, piss, fart, cunt fuck, arse and tits.

ETA: I have seen many old western movies in which the Indians were referred to as "Redskins." Supposedly, that word would be bleeped out. The soldiers and cowboys were often referred to as "Palefaces." I wonder if they would bleep that word too. How about "Roundeyes" which was a term sometimes used by Asian characters.

Do we censor all racial slurs, or none?

If we decide that they get censored, and if we decide that it's hate speech, then it isn't protected by the right to free speech.

I encourage you to write to whomever you want to try to influence this decision. That's what representative democracy is for.

Broadcasting is not the same as speech. Broadcasters need to obtain a license, which they can only keep by observing FCC regulations.

Those rules are already in place, and have always included consideration of context.
