George Carlin's Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyBH5oNQOS0) is classic comedic satire attacking the lameness of government banning words...

..."lameness" because I'm sure I wasn't the only one who memorized so easily the ordered cadence which eventually turns into a merry chant itself: shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.

Of course, by now, all of those once taboo words have been uttered on TV...

...but the US airwave police - the Federal Communications Commission - evidently believes it's righteous to return us to the days of yesteryear when anyone actually bought that they had any constitutional right at all to punish anyone for free speech.

For today the FCC is considering heroically protecting all our virtues once more by punishing anyone and any concern that has the audaciousness to employ, over our nation's airwaves, the word...

..."redskins".

Report: FCC considers ban of 'Redskins' on TV, radio

Use of the term "Redskins" on television and radio broadcasts could eventually be a punishable act.

The Federal Communications Commission is considering a penalty if the Washington NFL franchise's nickname is used on air, agency chairman Tom Wheeler indicated Tuesday, according to a CNBC.com report.

No doubt it's time again to remind those so easily offended that the First Amendment's command that "Congress shall make no law..." in regards to free speech isn't amended to protect just speech that any Committee or any individual or, indeed, any government deems "acceptable"...

...no, the 1st is specifically constitutionalized to guarantee that natural right of every individual to speak his mind no matter how offensive any other individual, and especially any government, may find that speech.

Alas...

...the pussification of America continues.

we must take America back from liberals, obama regime, government fucktards, and islam

I was always under the impression that the seven forbidden words were, literally, all four letter words: shit, piss, fart, cunt fuck, arse and tits.

ETA: I have seen many old western movies in which the Indians were referred to as "Redskins." Supposedly, that word would be bleeped out. The soldiers and cowboys were often referred to as "Palefaces." I wonder if they would bleep that word too. How about "Roundeyes" which was a term sometimes used by Asian characters.

Not at all shocked....which just makes South Park's latest episode even funnier.

Which band of anti free speech assholes is pushing for this one? Considering the nature of it and the die hard RW'er that eyer is I'm betting the LW race crusaders are.

LMAO

A course. If they could staple our tongues and kill all people under 32.5 they would. Go gently into the night. I heard there is a bright light and a kind hand reaches out for you. Sometimes it is clammy but it is a refuge. We need a new campaign. People who have been attacked by Ninjas. They are flooding our shores as we speak. Don't blame me if you get a star to the spine.

Is it really any different from the N-word? It's still a racial slur. Granted, "N" is the only racial slur that currently gets censored on broadcast media (cable media is exempt as it is not broadcast, so the South Park episode that was mentioned gets a pass), so the question should really be:

Do we censor all racial slurs, or none?

If we decide that they get censored, and if we decide that it's hate speech, then it isn't protected by the right to free speech.

I encourage you to write to whomever you want to try to influence this decision. That's what representative democracy is for.

That's swell, "TheCliffinator" (rotflmao)...

...but, before all you "we" majority bozos go deciding what you do and do not approve of to force everyone else to tow your popular-vote line, don't you think you should first do something about this small little obstacle to your quest for majority rule:

"Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech..."

Broadcasting is not the same as speech. Broadcasters need to obtain a license, which they can only keep by observing FCC regulations.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the FCC has the power to control the content of broadcasting.

Pretty much. The question is not if the government can stop you from saying things, but if you're entitled to the Government's megaphone, in this case broadcast bandwidth, no matter what you say.

A more relevant question would be, should it be their megaphone at all?

Not just broadcasting. There are well established limits to free speech. Or rather, there are limits to freedom from prosecution for exercising free speech. We can say whatever we want, just sometimes there are consequences.
Eeyore can even say fvck and sh!t.

The Federal Communications Commission is considering whether to punish broadcasters for using the moniker of the Washington NFL team, the Redskins, a word many consider a slur to Native Americans, the agency's chairman indicated on Tuesday.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the FCC has a duty to consider every petition they receive. I'm also guessing that they don't implement every request they receive in a petition.

No, what's funny is how you just spent the last two days screaming about how it is Republicans who are trying to tell us what we can and cannot do.

B-b-b-baby you just ain't seen n-n-n-n-nothin' yet!

Just the logical conclusion of the Democrat's "Hate-Speech" movement.

I knew you'd pick up on that. :D

I can find nowhere in the constitution any phrase that even remotely suggests that anyone has the right to not be offended.

Too hard to read.

Old-fashioned charter of negative liberties written by slave owners.

It's written in cursive..., ... we do not even teach that any more; might as well be written in AUSTRIAN!

Reminds me of the Penis Sketch on SNL. They used the word as often as they possibly could in valid context without any purient intent.

Same would go for redskin. Other rules that speak to intent would have to be re-written since the intent of the name's use now not the identified offensive usage. Just because some are offended doesn't make it vulgar.

Those rules are already in place, and have always included consideration of context.

BTW, SNL is broadcast mainly within the Safe Harbor as defined by the FCC's FAQ page.

What is the safe harbor? The safe harbor refers to the time period between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., local time. During this time period, a station may air indecent and/or profane material. In contrast, there is no safe harbor for the broadcast of obscene material. Obscene material is entitled to no First Amendment protection, and may not be broadcast at any time.
