The Official Author's Hangout 2014 Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

Just lost two votes. Somebody's runnin' the sweeper!

I thought i was mistaken with the amount of votes i had yesterday. Thanks for confirming i have not gone totally crazy. I lost about 10 votes but the score stayed the same was a little weird as I hadn't thought the submission deadline had happened yet.

I am pleased and surprised by how many votes my new story has received in a few hours.

One of the comments I don't understand at all. I suppose anon meant something. I'm sure it is negative but apart from that I have no idea what it means.

Any interpretations?

Today is the first day of your unproductive writing career.

I think we should design a Rosetta stone for trollish

You mean an actual stone, right? Not that terrible software. I'm gifted in foreign language and gave it a good try. I didn't learn a thing.

Thank you for that translation.

With over 200 of my stories on Literotica posted over 12 years, that comment seems slightly inaccurate.

Accuracy and trolls are rarely linked.

I had one the other day chew me out for having a woman referred to as pig during sex. Said it was too harsh and added, "Even in Pony and puppy play we..." So...you can treat a woman literally like an animal, but not call her a pig.

yes, I see the logic....

I got A TASTE OF INCEST: LEMONADE submitted after 6 hours of sultry writing (2600 words). It's still 3.5 hours till deadline. Maybe I can churn out another quickie and make dinner too?

You, Hypoxia, are an effing machine. :D

Well, that too. :)

But as it happens, I didn't get any more stories done. I *could* have adapted fragments / episodes of existing work. Still could, actually -- it's 48 minutes till deadline. But that would be cheating, right? Still, I could take a hot fuck at a commune from a RON tale (#5 I think), and a beach orgy from the first DEXTER story, and maybe a scene from the ALAN series, and stitch them together... could I do that in the next 1/2 hour? Probably. But I'm tired. And I burnt the onions.

At a little over 600 votes on mine now, so that pattern I've observed is holding steady. That's half again as many votes as I had at the end of day one.

The first day is still the big showing, but the couple of days following that are a lot bigger than they used to be. It's not just contest stories I've been seeing this on either. My regular postings and a few I've looked at have been following the same general pattern.

Comes out to about where I would expect the vote totals to be. It just takes a couple of days to get there, rather than one burst.

I think I have two comments on my contest entry Long Holiday from the same anonymous who can't find the Shift key and says "1 star".

Why bother to read such a long story just to leave a comment? If it really is a 1 Star story, why go beyond the first Lit page?

Newbie Contest Author

Can anyone explain either or both of the following:

What is "the sweeper" that seems to be linked to numbers of votes changing and scores changing?

How is the contest actually decided: is it simply the rating or is it the total number of "vote points" (i.e. 100 x 5 stars = 500 points + 250 x 4 stars = 1000 points etc.)

Thanks

The Web site periodically deletes votes on stories it considers illegitimate based on a formula it doesn't reveal. It's sweeping is particularly stringent on contest entries.

To win a theme contest, you have to have at least 25 votes (after the final sweeps have been conducted) and the highest rating.

You left out the magic eight ball shake at the end.

I think the little sweep was a fakeout for the trolls. They're back in numbers. The trolls that is.

The real sweeps will be fun. :)

I read a story a few days ago (one of many in a "series" or something), & the writer had a lot of recurring characters. [That was the reason I chose to read the one I did... I wanted to read the newest "Chapter", & checking the author's submission list, saw character(s) that interested me mentioned in description of earlier one.]

Anyhow, the characters did really seem to be in previous & later Chapters; I'm not just saying that because (though this is also true) the author spelled each one's name a dozen different ways.

I left a comment saying so, & they E-mailed me days later, asking for a list of more mistakes. I said I couldn't find them, but if I had referenced multiple problem, there must have been more than just the changed spelling of each character's name (though that alone, IMO, is reason for low rating/feedback).

They responded by insulting me!!

Point being... You ask why go beyond the first page as a reader, & I respond, "If your writing is that bad, why would you expect anyone reading for enjoyment/interest would want to go beyond Page 1?! Further more, why go beyond Chapter (let alone Page) 1 in the writing of it?!"

Or you could just move on to another story and not rattle their cage. Not all writers are posting here to receive critiques. (Actually, I bet very few are.) And, sorry, but it must be said, from your forum posts, you're not really one to be giving the stories critiques on grammar and spelling.
