That's pretty much the core of the matter in a nutshell. I am sorry that the girl in question felt harassed and chose to give in to the bullies, but being a victim to people with no real power is a personal choice.

The right thing to do in my opinion is to ignore such messages like the background noise they are, and not allow them to spoil your fun and drive you away. That kind of stuff is most likely written by some scruffy loser who is residing in his moms basement and never had sex without paying for it anyway. Why even acknowledge such a person?

Threats of rape and violence should never be. And it is beyond sad to think that it should be.

Maybe if some nut job succeeds on a threat and hunts a woman down and rapes and kills her and the authorities find out it started through here the site might take notice.

Until then? Like everything else here its treated like a big joke and I know for a fact that some people the site would call friends are the biggest bullies on these boards so another reason to pretend this is all just fine.

I haven't read every post on this thread because it went viral but this point usually falls unnoticed. IT DOESN'T WORK to stop the knuckle-draggers - they can't read apparently. Usually a man suggests this but I've had it in my profiles before I ever make a post but I got cold PM requests to chat, cam, exchange pictures anyway and continue to get them years later. It probably reduces the number (from the more mannerly who investigate a member first) but the jerks right-click my username and go straight to send message. All it takes is a female username.

Im not at all surprised this person got stalked in rl because the way I saw it, she had serious problems keeping her personal boundaries clear on the boards. It was very obvious to me at the time. I even remember thinking She is literally inviting harassment into her life.

I don't think she wanted sexual contact with anyone, though. It was more a curiosity about and openness to people--not the safest mind-sets for porn site participation.

The poster I'm thinking of researched my stories, outed me, contacted me in RL, wanted to meet me, came all the way across the country even though I responded that I keep my lives separate, sent me a photo of the original of a Master Thesis I'd written that's housed in the university library a mile and a half from my house as evidence she'd been here, identified a motel she'd stayed at just at the bottom of the ridge where I lived, and said she'd walked by my house to see where I lived. It wasn't a sexual thing, I'm sure, but it certainly was seeking RL connections. And she wasn't above a mild form of stalking herself--and I mean RL stalking.

That said, knowing where she works (and she's a woman, not a "girl"), how good her research was in identifying me from the content of my stories, how good and perceptive her comments on stories were, and how personable and a good discussant she is, I'll miss her from the Web site. That said, I don't think she was of the mind-set to be on a Web site like this, I think it was a good decision to leave, and I think we should just let it go.

I can't be PC enough to say she didn't leave herself open for this where it happened. Real is real. I'm also not PC enough to say the response to unwanted PMs is to rattle rockets. I think it's to ignore and move on.
