You'd be wrong. It fosters the kind of environment that gets people killed. IRL I'm so deep in the closet I'm finding Christmas presents because that kind of culture perpetuates hate crimes and Appalachia is STEEPED in it. It doesn't matter if you're in or out, you're gonna get offended, and some times strait up scared, because people who say shit like that can turn murderous and routeinly not even get punished for it. That's why there's a special category for hate crimes, because so many good ol boys judges didn't consider killing a fag to be murder, so the feds had to step in and remind them that they have to punish for it. And they still don't. Police won't investigate properly, judges won't punish properly, because that kind of language is a symptom of a society that robs people of their humanity.

It doesn't matter so much from Smooth, because he's not real, but in really real people, yeah. It's fucked up. And it's offensive.

Edit: Also, in what world would you think that a black person wouldn't be offended by the 'n word'? Somebody said something like that about my girl or my daughter I'm culturally obligated to beat the shit out of them. And I am tiny. But I have to do it anyway. It's terribly inconvenient.

Her momma was of pioneer stock. My momma's first home was 1/2 of a 5 acre parcel with a fence down the middle. A Mexican family rented the plot next door. She was warned not to "play with those kids next door" because grandma alleged they were "dirty." My Mom is a little OCD and she was in later life always embarrassed to bring friends over because her mom would not have earned a Good Housekeeping Seal. Mom told me the other families dirt floor was swept out every day and everything was cleaned and pressed.

She used to defy grandma and accept rolled tortillas through the fence.

She made a point of telling me this story as we drove past tarpaper shacks with brightly colored clothes hanging from the clotheslines. I actually thought "colored" in 1968 referred to apparel, not skin.

I think a lot of people have used it over the years in one context or another that seemed OK to them at the time. I will concede that his ease of use is telling. It is not something that will ever "slip" from my lips from ease of use. I maintain that it seems to spill easy from MouthOfThe BobsDownSouth's the way my "ear" hears it.
