There are plenty of people who just don't get the fact that the news media in general have a vested interest in sensationalism. Blowing the story up sells papers, increases viewership and ad revenue.

The individual reporters are interested in getting bylines, face time on camera. They are more interested in getting the story first than they are in getting it right.

We have lousy reporters these days. Chet Huntley was the most trusted man in America. There isn't a reporter I can think of today who could crack the top 1,000.

Take the "police are throwing tear gas at us" sensation early in this event. The reporters were in among the rioters. I suspect the police were throwing tear gas at the rioters. But the egocentric reporters feel it was being thrown at them personally, and for "evil" purposes.

Being told to turn off the lights isn't suppressing the press. The lights A) ruin the officer's night vision and B) make them better targets. Since people started shooting at the officers the first day, I wouldn't want the lights on me either if I was an officer there.

Your broad brush accusation notwithstanding, I think most people recognize that sensationalism sells (it's the cornerstone of Fox News, for crying out loud!).

One episode in particular stands out, though, with regard to tear gas: I believe it was last Wednesday. A local news team was two blocks away from the protesters and the police. They were setting up for a "we're here, LIVE!" sorta thing that is very common on the news today...

They started filming their little news bumper, and a tear gas cylinder...the very first of the day....falls right in their midst.

This was a textbook case of police antagonism. It speaks volumes of the lack of professionalism of the police in Ferguson. It's a bully-boy mentality that shows an utter contempt for the public, a mentality that seeps into and rots a great many police departments in this militaristic post-9/11 environment.

Police chief said the shoplifting had not been reported.

Are you suggesting that the cop "knew" the cigars were stolen?

MSNBC Guest Warns Of Pending “Genocide” Of Black Men In America Because Of The “War On Black Boys”…

Alternate headline: MSNBC guest jumps the shark… nukes shark tank… jumps it again.

Via Mediate:

On Hardball Monday, MSNBC contributor Michelle Bernard said the U.S. is on the verge of experiencing a “genocide” of young black men. …

“I don’t have an answer that is palatable to be able to look my children in the face and say there are people in this country who– not only do not like African-Americans, but they despise black men,” Bernard said. “There is a war on black boys in this country. In my opinion, there is a war on African-American men.” [...]

“I hope so,” Bernard said, “because this is, it’s going to turn into a genocide if it doesn’t stop.”

Darren Wilson, the Ferguson cop who shot and killed Michael Brown, did not know Brown was a suspect in a shoplifting case at the time, police chief Thomas Jackson said at a press conference today

I'm trying to figure out why you think he deserved to be shot.

You're the one offering the various reasons about which I've asked.

A big TEE HEE to Egypt

Egypt Urges U.S. To Show Restraint In Ferguson, Uses Same Language Obama Used To Criticize Their Crackdown On Muslim Brotherhood…

Egypt +1

CAIRO (Reuters) – Egypt on Tuesday urged U.S. authorities to exercise restraint in dealing with racially charged demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri – echoing language Washington used to caution Egypt as it cracked down on Islamist protesters last year.

It is unusual for Egypt to criticize such a major donor, and it was not immediately clear why the government would have taken such a step.

Ties between Washington and Cairo were strained after Egyptian security forces killed hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters following the army’s ousting of freely elected President Mohamed Mursi in July 2013.

Western allies have voiced concern about the democratic credentials of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the army chief who toppled Mursi and went on to win elections. The United States has, however, continued to provide military and other support to Cairo.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s statement on the unrest in Ferguson read similarly to one issued by U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration in July 2013, when the White House “urged security forces to exercise maximum restraint and caution” in dealing with demonstrations by Mursi supporters.

The cop did not know he shoplifted.

We can justify shootings by things not known?

This morning's news is that twelve or more witnesses have come forward backing the Officer's story, that Brown attacked the officer in his car and then charged the officer.

Let the facts unfold.

And let a jury decide them.
