Me at the airport at 5:00am flying out to Florida (before I figured out how to reverse to camera).

Me in the rental car driving up to West Palm Beach (also before I figured out how to reverse to camera).

Palm Trees! (I needed a shave)

Another shot of me about to not eat lunch at the restaurant behind me (I eventually did eat there on the third attempt when they weren't so busy that there was a waiting line).

It's good to see a smile, TGP.

And I do hope that the Hurricane (or whatever it was in the USA) is tailed off.
We've got a bit of it here; oodles of rain and some brisk winds. It must have been some weather!

Yeah, our weather's not great, either. Been a weird cool summer.

So the other day someone asked if a friend could read my previously-published stories. I said sure, send your copies (the stuff's not available online right now). The guy wrote me today and forwarded his friend's email with an apology; she found the character shallow and the dialogue not up to par.

Should have checked that email later. :p

Ah well, they are early efforts.

2+ inches of rain in the last 4 days and it just started pouring again. Rumor has it we may actually see the sun for a couple of days before going through another stretch of rainfall. On the bright side at least it might break the slight drought we're in.

You know, there are often times with writing reviews that I recall back to that old bit of motherly advice, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all." Too many times I've noticed that people seem to think that it's quite alright to tear someones work to shreds.

There's a lesson for trolls, there!

I have just read through two hundred pages of my local council's requirements for volunteers to take over running a small museum.

They ask the volunteers to deliver more than they were ever able to do, on much less money, more professionally than they ever could, and to increase visitor numbers to a level they never achieved.

The sting in the tail? They'll reduce the money (which is already only 20% of what they spent) by 10% in year 5, and 20% in year 10, with no allowance for inflation over those 10 years, AND expect the volunteers to generate more income during year 1 from visitors than they ever managed.

I have just sent my advice to the volunteers' committee:

Summary:

Don't touch it with a barge pole!

Not only is the documentation as I said above, but they expect the volunteers to assume unlimited financial responsibilities for some events (you can't insure for 'unlimited'!), and they reserve the right to change, add and increase the responsibilities and their expectations at any time.

They want a blank cheque!

And they expect anything the volunteers do in the Museum to have their prior approval in writing.

They want 'Power without responsibility' and expect us to accept "Responsibilty without power'.

Revolutions have been started for less.

Well said, Ogg.
And I do hope that the would-be committee sees fit to offer you proper thanks for wading through 200 pages of absolute drivel.

Come to think about it, it might be worth writing a reply document, stating the conditions under which they would accept the responsibilities of running the library and events, etc.. [I'd be tempted to say 'starting with
no further changes for N years, and financial back-up when required.]

I stopped by school today with the first trunk load of things for the new year. A desk piled high with books ~ I swear my desk was cleared when I left ~ and, as far as my decoupage project goes, it's nothing I can't repair with my heavy-duty staple gun and a box of rather stout staples. And yards and yards of black duct tape, but that goes without saying.

Why do people insist on posting links to photos when it is so fucking easy to post the photo???

I really don't get it! I've gotten to the point that I just ignore those posts and refuse to click on the links anymore.

Hope the weather brightens for you. :)

I think the books in question are decent, and better than some I've read, but there's also no question to me that they could use some work. I think they could stand to be streamlined in several ways, mostly by reducing the POV characters. And the comment wasn't mean, just honest, and preceded by an apology, I think. So it wasn't so bad. :)

Because some of us cannot manage it.
And let's face it, it's not difficult to click on a link, is it ?

Apart from that, I'm personally peaved with those who put up Giant pictures, which make my PC screen scream for help.

I get the part about massively sized pictures. ;)

Last I looked, Lit has a file size limit (and a small one), so you can only put up small pics anyway. At any rate, my stuff is set not to display images (kids around, you know). Is yours set that way? The setting is probably under the User CP link at the top left.

No, no, I understand all that. My settings show photos of those that post them. But in some of the pic threads, there are numerous folks that have been around for years with thousands of posts (i.e. not a newbie) that just post the links. When it is so easy to just click on the 'insert photo' icon above and embed that same photo in the post. But they choose to post the link instead.

It's nothing that will cause me to drive off the road. It's just annoying...

Because they don't own the photos or have permission to repost them? (Was this a trick question?)

Not a trick question. But I do understand there is probably not a good answer.

Has nothing to do with permissions or ownership of the photos. It's just odd to me.

All I can say is ... don't go snooping in my email, and then complain to me when you find something you don't like. :(

It won't help them if I write pages after pages of glowing praises. If something ain't good, pointing it out works for the best.

Well, as has been said before, constructive criticism is a good thing, but "this sucks" isn't very useful.
