I read a fascinating article a while back about "Hearts n minds" in Iran. Way back in 2001, religious extremism in Iran was at a post-Shah low. They weren't at war with Iraq anymore, and the first post-Shah generation had an enormous desire for US and Egyptian imports. Religion was an afterthought, and Iranians began voting in increasingly moderate (by Iranian standards) politicians.

Then, after 9/11, things changed due to a rather stupid miscalculation by Teh Decider. Dubya couldn't punish his buddies the Saudis for their people's role in 9/11, so he chose to single out Iran as one of the Bogeymen Of Choice, labelling Iran as an "axis of evil". That was basically supposed to be a domestic-only punchline in the USA, but it scared the shit out of the younger Iranians. They thought 'what in the fuck did WE do to deserve this?" (and rightfully so!)...and they got scared.

Well, if there is one thing that religious conservatives of all kinds know how to do, it is to exploit fear and uncertainty. Dubya the politically tone-deaf buffoon drove an entire generation of liberalized Iranians back into the welcoming, suffocatin' bosom of Mother Islam.

Sooo....my point is...modern capitalism can sometimes do what modern diplomacy cannot. Sure it takes longer, and God knows Americans are impatient and demand immediate results, but it can be done.

The Kurds are mostly Muslim, but very reasonable Muslims. There are a lot of other Kurdish religions, such as Yazidism, and many are not very religious at all. I'm for doing whatever we can do to help them survive.

That's a tad simplistic but essentially correct. We (the United States) gave them a framework, they elected Karzi, we all declared victory and America left.

Immediately afterwards, Karzi and his party go "full Republican" and attempt to squeeze out the opposition Sunni Muslims, year after year of marginalizing them.

That particular chicken has now come home to roost.

This is an internal Iraqi matter.
