On 9/11 a group of terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center. Immediately the misinformation exploded over the airwaves: they were said to be immigrants from Al Qaeda territory when in reality they came from Saudi Arabia and were naturalized citizens here. Then came the hatemongering - culminating in the deaths of two Arab Christians who were suspected to be Muslims ergo terrorists.
After that, came the War On Terror - the invasion of Afghanistan, and then the misguided invasion of Iraq based on a pack of lies. And now, finally, we are launching endless waves of drone strikes against Middle Easterners on the word of unaccountable forces that have declared the targets to be terrorists. We don't get to see any proof, there is no due process, there is only death for the target and the innocent civilians standing next to them, and even death for the first responders who show up to care for the surviving wounded.
The parallels with Elliot Rodger are striking.
Elliot Rodger went on a killing spree that took 6 lives and wounded 7 others. His online manifesto screeched a litany of complaints about women and his intent to commit a huge misogynistic massacre.
First came the misinformation - that he's affiliated with the Men's Rights Movement. He literally has no MRA ties - he has ties to the Pickup Artist movement which is diametrically opposed to the Men's Rights movement. But because he had trouble with women and he targeted and killed women, he must be a MRA.
Just like if an Arab terrorist kills 3,000 Americans, he must be Muslim and therefore Islam is our enemy. So let's go bomb Iraq - after all we hate Muslims.
The difference between 9/11 and Elliot Rodger? Those Arabs who launched the 9/11 attacks MAY have been Muslim. Elliot Rodger, however, was in no way affiliated with the Men's Rights movement.
We have no justification in bombing the crap out of Muslims in the Middle East like we are. There's even less justification for tarring the Men's Rights movement over a man who was never even affiliated with us.
