In the new age of electronics there is a consequence to raising the minimum wage. I'm getting a kick out of the SEIU wannabe's who are striking the fast food industry in the US demanding a 'living wage' for what is essentially low level skills.

In France, which recently raised it's minimum wage to $12.22/hr (9.53 in Euros) Burger King is responding by going to Kiosk ordering systems thereby eliminating most counter jobs.

Have it your way

It should be noted that France has had a perpetual unemployment rate of 10+% for over a decade.

Meanwhile and enterprising Silicon Valley company is busily eliminating the 'burger flipper.'

Robo-flipper

Brave new world indeed. Nothing like pricing yourself out of the market.

It's math. Libbies don't understand math.

LIBS don't understand value substitution. When you raise the price of plywood builders buy boards. When burgers cost more folks eat more KFC.

That's just going to hasten the arrival of an official guaranteed income instead of the patchwork system we have now. If you can't put these no-skill low productivity workers in some kind of nominal job (to at least keep up appearances, protestant-work-ethicwise) you're going to have to support them outright.

There's a fallacy there Roscoe. You don't have to support them, although there would be serious social and political consequences for not doing so. The traditional solution to this sort of problem was to encourage them to emigrate, but I can't think of a nation on the face of the earth that would accept our non-productive poor.

Given the scope of the problem I'm astonished at all this talk about amnesty. Flooding the workforce with 12 to 20 million (depends on who's doing the counting) mostly unskilled and uneducated immigrants just doesn't seem like a viable solution to anything.

In the end the question is, "Who is going to pay for all this largess?" Eventually it will be the skilled that emigrate and that only makes the problem worse.

The underclass is well-represented on the GB, so here's a tip for the Pink's , WQ's and others with limited marketable skills.

Arts & Crafts.

As mechanization replaces the jobs previously held by the underclass, there will be an increasing market for hand-crafted items.

Learn how to make something you can sell. Jam. Pickles. Folk Art, etc.

Or get yourself a wood lathe....MLB bats for example, are made by hand, and cost well over $1,000 each.

you're welcome

The Administrations Economic job growth has always been minimum wage, that's why so many stayed on unemployment.
It's a pity so many teenagers are out of work, life used to be good.

Comparatively speaking, the minimum wage is worth less than it always has historically. Your statement is non-sensical.

I meant that you don't see many teenagers working in the fast food or minimum wage field, as oppose to adults of late or lately, your call.

My .02 cents on this, fast food should be an entry level job into the work force, I am not saying there is anything wrong with the work. I just feel that America should have a bigger manufacturing base to provide more jobs.

I'm guessing you missed WQ's adventure series that began with her selling the best chocolate in the world (and ended with maggots).

maybe we can raise the min. wage to $25 per hour. Sweden didn't get the votes so perhaps we can be the highest in the world.

Reuters) - Swiss voters on Sunday rejected proposals to introduce the world's highest minimum wage and spend $3.5 billion buying new Gripen fighter jets from Saab.

About 76 percent of voters in the wealthy nation dismissed the proposal made by Swiss union SGB and backed by the Socialist and Green parties for a minimum wage of 22 Swiss francs ($25) per hour, final results showed.

The clear rejection of the proposed minimum wage - which corresponds to a monthly paycheck of 4,000 francs (about $4,500) - brings relief to business leaders worried the measure would have hurt competitiveness and damaged the Swiss workplace.

"If the initiative had been accepted, without doubt that would have led to job cuts, particularly in remote and structurally weaker regions," Swiss Economy Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann said at a news conference.

Good idea on the surface, but in the case of food stuffs you'd quickly have the FDA, state and local health inspectors up your ass.

As far as the bats go, I'm betting that one or more entities have the market on aged hickory cornered. They may be hand made, but if you can't get the wood it makes little difference.

Those kiosks are coming regardless of what the minimum wage is. As you pointed out, they're already here.

Please, if you're gonna make ethnocentric mistakes, at least don't make the cliche ones. ;)

Sweden, if you're interrested, have no minimum wage, nor plans to get one.

She may have meant to say Switzerland. They had a vote against the raising of their minimum wage a couple of days ago.

Or she didn't really bother to read the article closely and just felt like taking potshots anyways.

Yeah I know. Was just having fun with it. It's the classic "ignorant American" trope, the tourist who steps of the plane in Zürich and wants to know where the blondes, IKEA and ABBA are.

Why don't we just raise the minimum wage to $60,000 per year? Then we can all be upper-middle-class and life will be all rainbows and puppies.
