So was the problem reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic or using the word Allah? I don't get why they would have allowed the Pledge of Allegiance be recited in Arabic, if they weren't allowed to say Allah. What should they have said instead? Used the word God in English? There's no other word for God in Arabic, if you want Arabic you get Allah, no other option.

Basically it's fine to force everyone into a Christian mode of worship, as long as we simply insist that it's ecumenical. When someone points out that it isn't universal they're a terrorist.

I'm dying to know how many redneck hackles would have gone up if it was Hebrew and "Hashem" they'd probably be jizzing all over an Israeli flag because rapture.

Yet another perfect reason everyone should do the God thing on their own time and go to religious school or opt out if it's too heathen to do so. Starting with adding God to the perfectly fine prior to red scare pledge.

This crowd-funding shit is out of control!!!!!
A girlfriend posted a thing about needing money to cover her teenage son's minor surgery. A few weeks later posted pics of his brand fucking new truck. Really????

Now another guy I know is posting about needing funds to go back to Europe (for vacation) I know, get a fucking job!

The site everyone seems to be using has this disclaimer, "Flexible Funding: This campaign will receive all funds raised even if it does not reach its goal."
So you're basically begging people for money.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but what happened to living within your means? Begging for money for a European trip when you don't have a job?
Asking for money, then flaunting new cars?
Geee, I drive a 24 year old beater, my teenage son has no car because we can't afford one (or the insurance alone) We are in desperate need of a Doctors visit, home repairs, etc.
Yet, I'd never be so bold as to beg friends to fund these things. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. sigh.

The air conditioner is apparently out of Freon because, although the fan still blows air, the house is just getting hotter. I finally gave up and turned the whole thing off because there's no point in running up the power bill if it's not cooling the house.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if this weren't Friday evening. That means I've got to wait until Monday at the very earliest to get someone to come out here and check it. Oh, and the highs this weekend are going to be in the mid-80s (30ish C). So I get to melt for the next three days! Fun!

Plus, I've gotta clean my house in this heat before the maintenance people come. I'm a lazy housekeeper, and I'm ashamed for anyone to see the hot mess that is my kitchen. Ugh.

Many years ago, we used to hang out a lot with friends who always complained of being short of money.
We didn't have much money either, but I thought it was terrible when they talked about having to feed their little one year old oatmeal all day because they didn't have money to serve something more varied.
To help them out we invited them over for dinner a lot, sent the leftovers with them and brought casseroles when we were visiting. This went on until we found out that this lack of money was after they had put a big sum away every month, saving for a house. Something we didn't have money enough to do at the time.

Lesson learned. People have very different priorities.

This type of thing never ceases to amaze me. I'm around people of all different financial strata and its rare that I see anyone who lives within their income. Well off or practically destitute, all seem to indulge in luxury spending. Whether that be buying lots of alcohol and partying all weekend or buying a luxury sports car that requires an astronomical loan.

"I deserve this," seems to be the current credo.

One of my sibling regularly overspends, and then complains of being in desperate financial straits. If I try to help her budget she instantly goes on defense. Any extra I suggest cutting out is a "necessity"!

IrisAlthea and Stella are right. People just have different priorities, and financial solvency, whatever your income, is out of fashion.

Our entire economy depends on people spending. As it is set up, it functions best when a significant portion of the population can spend about $100 per day. That's what spreads the money around, and the trickledown comes into play-- but that's the middle and upper class, not the uber wealthy.

I don't know about you, but I feel bad because I can no longer do my civic duty with the dollars-- in large part because I'm no longer receiving my share of that $100 per day, because like CM my living depends on people spending too, and CM can't do her spending duty, either.

I doubt that I'm making any sense here...

I remember reading an article by some economist who went and lived with a family for two months. He said he'd counselled them to stop going out to eat, and thwife burst into tears. It turned out that "going out to eat" meant macDonalds once very couple of weeks-- if they were lucky. And that was one of the very few times the family had a chance to be out in public. Eating communally --even with strangers-- is kind of... important to human sense of well being. otherwise we begin to feel isolated, and sad.

You're making perfect sense to me.

I operate in a universe where upper middle class income allows the daily "bread & butter" sorts of transactions, but money pays the bills. Which means that even though I live very simply (by both necessity and choice), that simplicity can be detrimental to my [personal] bottom line.

Living in both worlds is kinda fascinating though...

No, this makes perfect sense. In addition, the shaky economy makes the middle and upper classes who do have disposable income reluctant to spend.

Not quite sure if you're being sarcastic here. Perhaps I should have added that my sister asked me to help her budget. And, if her overspending consisted of a McDonalds trip every couple of weeks I'd hardly be aggravated.

On a slightly different note, we're having foundation work (common in our area) done today. Woohoo!

Not only is it hideously expensive (and not the "fun" kind of spending), but its ugly, noisy, and a little bit scary. They've started lifting the house and it creaks like all the walls are going to cave in.

My SO is enjoying himself hugely: running around, asking questions, and talking tech details.

I, on the other hand, have given up trying to work and am actively looking for reasons to leave the house.

My aunt, a devoted cat lover, lost one of her cats a few months ago. Today she called to say the other had been killed in an accident. She had the first cat for 15 years. The second had been her son’s, an only child who passed away four years ago. She is understandably devastated.

Technically, I suppose, this doesn't make me mad, but it certainly makes me sad.
