The point of no return is well passed.

The Permafrost Carbon Feedback is occurring with rising air temperatures in the Arctic. And, it is irreversible on human time scales. Plus, it's not even factored into the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report.

Adapt.

In the eighteenth century, sailors went much further South than has ever been possible since. They were in open seas where massive ice-sheets have been in place for the whole of the 20th Century.

It was thought that their navigational skills were defective and that they were recording locations that were impossible. But recording how far North or South a ship is has been much more accurate than Easting or Westing. In recent years traces of an eighteenth century sealers' camp site on Antarctica has been found in a location that would have been impossible to reach without a modern icebreaker - unless the sea was open at the time.

Sometimes, you need the tool that's best suited to the job in hand. And for George R. R. Martin, that means using an archaic word processor—WordStar 4.0, running on DOS, no less—to write Game of Thrones. He explained why to Conan last night.

First, it means that he has a computer dedicated to writing—obviously he doesn't check his email and browse the web on DOS, that'd be silly—which presumably allows him to concentrate better. But it seems the main reason is simplicity: a lack of frustrating spell checks and autocorrects, which is kind of what you want when writing new and strange fictional words on a daily basis.

I'd go anywhere with you!
