Darlin', the oceans are mighty ginormous.

People don't realize just how huge they are 'til they get on a small boat and cross 'em.

The Roaring Forties and the Furious Fifties are basically completely wide-open expanses of ocean that circle the globe with no interruption.

That's kind of awesome, don't you think?

That in the year 2014 with a satellite-encrusted skyline and Internet on our phones, we can still lose a whole plane in the ocean.

It's a tragedy, and I'm sad for the deceased and their families - but at the same time it's cool to know that there's still uncharted, unmonitored spaces on planet earth.

Midnight we slip into her room
and fill her pockets with stones
so that she is weighted down
so that storms cannot move her

She disappears for hours
then staggers back smelling of straw
of animal

Perhaps we have lost her
perhaps home is no longer comfort
or comfort no longer home

Evenings we sit awake in
our disenchanted kitchen
listening to the dog whine
to Dorothy clicking her heels

It's scary big empty out there.

Very few people truly understand or appreciate that fact.

I should have just sucked on them and spit them out.

Smiley, now I'm going to hear Johnny singing to me all day.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Johnny Cash is one of the greatest country singers of all time.

There's a special place in my heart for country. I used to spend my weekends singing back up vocals and playing guitar with my step dad. Each month we'd load his steel guitar and other equipment into the truck and I'd drive (he was so game, bad hip) out to different gigs.

I liked the sandwiches they provided at the country club, but there weren't many people my age to hang with.

We can lose large bulk carriers as well, far larger than any aircraft.

I can say, with all honesty, that being out on the ocean in a small craft is one of THE most scariest, yet enthralling experiences one can experience.

The thrill of the unknown. Death by drowning and never being discovered. It's awesome. That's how you separate the women from the girls.

Johnny is the only country I can listen to. Just the one song is quite appropriate, for today.

Oh. Oh. Oh. You sing?

A little bit, yeah. It's a family trait, I suppose.

My eldest brother used to sing in the choir. My eldest sister who passed away last year used to take him to choir practice on her motorbike.

My grandfather played the sax, my mum played the uke, my younger brother plays drums.

I play guitar, a bit of piano and sing.

I've read about your piano lessons, do you also compose?

yay for free showtime weekend preview. boo for everything they're showing right now being terrible.

I'll write bits of music for myself, but I wouldn't say I'm a composer. I love to listen and play or sing along. Our little girl can sing. She's 10. She has a performance coming up at a theatre here in Sydney soon.

Do you play any instruments?

No way, I wish. But I sure appreciate listening. Piano has been a part of my household since I was very young. And now my littles are taking lessons. One is on her 6th year of piano. My mom used to play Scarborough Faire and just by coincidence my daughter has that piece as part of her upcoming recital. Often I'll just close my eyes and listen and can't stop the tears from those nostalgic memories.

by drowning them?

Haha!

Sorry, I was too busy perving on Aqua.

I've seen my fair share of boating incidents. No life jacket, no radio. Not even a rope for the launch I had to flag down to tow us to the nearest port that one time.

However. Once you've been through a few courses and accumulated enough hours on the ocean you develop a staunch boating repertoire.

And just hope that nobody drowns. It's one of the risks that come in to play when you're out on the ocean. Boat masters or not. You do the best you can to save a person, without risking your life or the lives of others.
