Health, media mogul Paul Ramsay leaves $3bn estate to charity
BILLIONAIRE Paul Ramsay has left the bulk of his $3 billion-plus estate to charity, according to an announcement from the Ramsay Health Care board.
The founder of Ramsay Health Care and former chairman of Prime Media died late last night after suffering a heart attack.
In a statement to the ASX today, Ramsay Health Care said Mr Ramsay had left the bulk of his stake in the company to the Paul Ramsay Foundation.
“The Foundation will receive the benefit of the vast majority of his controlling shareholding in Ramsay Health Care Ltd, which will largely be retained on trust for the Foundation,’’ the statement said.
Mr Ramsay controlled about 37 per cent of Ramsay — the nation’s largest private hospital operator.
The Foundation will be administered by Michael Siddle, deputy chairman of Ramsay, along with Ramsay directors Peter Evans and Tony Clark.
In accordance with Mr Ramsay’s will, the intention is for the Foundation to remain a significant long-term shareholder of Ramsay Health Care.
Mr Ramsay, 78, had been holidaying on his boat in Spain when he suffered the heart attack.
He was flown back from Spain yesterday on a private jet to be able to die in his beloved Australia, a close source told The Australian.
He died shortly before midnight at his home in Bowral, NSW.
It is understood he did not regain consciousness following the heart attack.
A noted philanthropist, Mr Ramsay AO was the chairman of the listed Ramsay Health Care, Australia’s largest private hospital company.
Mr Ramsay was Australia’s ninth richest person and the 499th richest person in the world, with an estimated fortune of $US3.3 billion ($A3.57 billion), according to Forbes.
“He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, staff and doctors and anyone that knew him, throughout the world,” Ramsay Health Care said in a statement.
Most of Mr Ramsay’s wealth came from his 36 per cent stake in Ramsay Health Care, which has more than quadrupled in value since 2009.
Mr Ramsay started the company in 1964 when he purchased a guest house on Sydney’s north shore and converted it into a psychiatric hospital.
The company was floated in 1997 and now has more than 150 hospitals and clinics across Australia, Europe and Asia.
Mr Ramsay was also chairman of regional broadcaster Prime Media Group for nearly 30 years, before stepping down recently after selling his 30 per cent stake in the company.
Prime was closely aligned with Kerry Stokes’ Seven West Media, and executive chairman Kerry Stokes today said staff at the company was “saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Paul Ramsay”.
“For nearly 30 years, he guided the development of Prime Media as a partner with the Seven Network,” Mr Stokes said.
“During that period, he conducted his business with us as he lived his life. There was never a cross word or a raised voice. That’s a miracle in our business.
“His enthusiasm and zest for life was infectious
“He was a great builder and had a very big heart. He loved people and he loved life. His businesses were like families to him and he achieved amazing results.
“Over the past couple of decades, with his growing involvement in Ramsay Health Care, he was also a strong supporter of Telethon in Western Australia and a great contributor nationally.
“Personally, I have lost a colleague and a very dear friend. He has however left a legacy of treasured memories.”
Mr Ramsay also owned a stake in soccer club Sydney FC and was the club’s chairman from 2009 to 2012.
In 2002, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the community.
Mr Ramsay, who was single and had no children, maintained a relatively low public profile, but was known for his political and charity donations.

In the USA 86 million private sector workers support 148 million benefit takers.
There are also 16 million government workers (not counted in the 86 million tally) — some of whom are most definitely serving the public. On the other hand, some of the private sector workers are doing contracts for the government, and are effectively government paid workers. I wouldn’t want to quibble about the exact numbers.
What matters is that we are at the point where half the voters are surely (and quite rationally) focused on voting for benefits. How does a democracy thrive?
