The written word is very powerful. Some the stories that I've read on the site are, for example, far more erotic than many images that I've seen, although there are always exceptions.

Stories will always be more powerful Sus. You're setting the scene in your own head.
Isn't that often why when you've read a book you can end up disappointed by the film?
Because it isn't what you imagined in your minds eye...

With some films, it does work that way, but with others, not so much, it depends on how well the film depicts the book. You've hit the nail on the head with the setting of scenes in your head though.
