Leader of the Hate Group. Westboro Baptist Church.

1929-2014

The following bit is copy-pasted from wikipedia, the people he targeted.

{ Prominent examples include President Ronald Reagan, Princess Diana, Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, National Football League star Reggie White, Sonny Bono, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, atheists, Muslims, murdered college student Matthew Shepard, the late children's television host Fred Rogers, the late Australian actor Heath Ledger, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, political commentator Bill O'Reilly, Jews, film critic Roger Ebert, Catholics, Australians, Swedes, the Irish, and US soldiers killed in Iraq. He also targeted the Joseph Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington, Massachusetts, center of the David Parker controversy. In 2006, they planned a protest at the funeral for the murdered children of the West Nickel Mines School, but called it off, opting to spread their messages on a local radio station instead. In 2007 he stated that he would target the late Jerry Falwell's funeral.

Phelps' daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, has appeared on Fox News Channel, defending the WBC and attacking homosexuality. She and her children have also appeared on the Howard Stern radio show attempting to promote their agenda and church.

Phelps' followers have repeatedly protested the University of Kansas School of Law's graduation ceremonies.

In August 2007, in the wake of the Minneapolis I-35W bridge collapse, Phelps and his congregation stated that they would protest at the funerals of the victims. In a statement, the church said that Minneapolis is the "land of the Sodomite damned". }

As a gay guy from minnesota (wink wink) I'm happy for several reasons that he's gone.

I wonder how many of the above will try to picket his funeral?

Yeah, I can see the conversation with God now...

God: Fred! What the FUCK where you thinking?

Fred: Blasphemer!

God: Fred! Pay attention. I am God.

Fred: But you're a woman! And a soldier?

God: Hey Luc, I have another one for you. He'll be right down.

Whoosh!

If the church protested all those soldiers and public servants died because God hates gays, does that mean Fred died also because of those same gays? What is the irony in that?

A friend posted this to Facebook a few days ago. As much of a complete douche bag Phelps was, there was at least something good that could be said about him.

So Fred Phelps, that Westboro Church God Hates Fags guy, is about to die. And I don't think there are many tears to be shed, not at all. In fact, most people are probably happy about it.

But as I think about his "mark", and all of the anger he generated with his insane protests and disruption of funerals and events, I think what resulted from all that is something very positive. People who might have felt the same way to some extent, had to question their opinions and some changed them because they didn't want to be cast in the same sense as Fred. And for the majority of straight folks, who never really thought about it much or cared, started to think about how they feel about LBGT people, and stand with them, at least in spirit if not in person.

Fred Phelps, through hate and being incredibly rude and despicable, served to raise the level of discourse, and probably led to a lot of the changes in the law and in the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans to being more sympathetic towards our LBGT brothers and sisters. Odd but true, Fred Phelps probably did more for LBGT people in the US than anyone else. Not his goal for sure, but the result of his actions. A very odd legacy, to have done so much to help those who he wanted to hurt.

I won't shed a tear, or even wish that he rest in any peace, but in a very ironic way, props to Fred Phelps for utterly and completely failing at what he tried to do, so much so that he accomplished exactly the opposite.

I wonder if WBC will fall apart without his charisma, or if lady-phelps will take over.

She took over several years ago, as far as I can understand.

I have pondered this same sentiment as well...

Another STELLA the Fauxy Fella sighting. HE'S EVERYWHERE! HE'S EVERYWHERE!

Hey, anybody who hates lawyers can't be all bad.

Good riddance.

Protesting the funerals of dead soldiers, mocking the wives, parents children of those men and women.

Saying the kids in CT deserved to die because the state supports homosexuals....

The only thing I'll give him credit for is he was blatantly ignorant and repulsive where as most bible thumpers try to pretend they are good people or have good intentions

never the less, hell has one more citizen and the world is a better place.

Already happened. According to his son Nate, Fred was excommunicated a while back: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/17/fred-phelps-excommunicated-wbc_n_4981300.html

I plan to mark the occasion by looking for opportunities to be nice to people.

edit: Interesting reading here, from one of his grandchildren who repudiated WBC: https://gypsiesandsinners.wordpress.com/

The other day an old man died in jail. He'd campaigned to be released several times and been turned down. Even after nigh on five decades since he was banged up, his conviction for the murder of a couple of young girls and the suspicion he killed a couple more, Raymond Leslie Morris, the Cannock Chase murderer has gone to meet his maker.
If there is a special Hell for child-killers and such persons, I really hope he's in it.
There are several folks in the area who can breathe a sigh of relief.

I just ponder on the prospect of Phelps, with his rabid views and twisted version of the Christian Faith, meeting Morris.
There's plot bunny there, I think.

Wonder if I could sell tickets to piss on his grave? Talk about a money making proposition.
