I'm sure this topic has been flogged beyond recognition, but I was wondering if any of you engage with those who leave comments on your stories, good or bad? Having read way too many Twitter wars and what have you I'm inclined to read and glean what I can from the comments then ignore them. However some have been very nice and maybe a thank you is in order. Thoughts?

Most are trolls in one form or another.

Yes,

I correspond with many who started out leaving comments, then sending emails. They are scattered around and I have not met most but I have met a couple, and in one case, became very good friends. He lives one state over but we get together whenever we can.

I usually don't write in my own comment section, but I have encountered a few readers in PM's, mail and forum.

I consider it pointless to respond to a comment by another comment except to correct any factual statements.

Why?

Because the person who commented is unlikely to return to the story to read any responses.

I should acknowledge the comment by PM if the person is contactable by PM or email, to thank them for their thoughts, especially if they have been critical. If the story is new, I try to reply to all comments. But if the comment is on one of my older stories, I might not notice until weeks after the comment is made - too late.

I try to thank commenters for their comments by email, whether they are good or bad. I think it might encourage them to vote and comment more. I don't think I've ever argued with a commenter. It's pointless as Og said.

Feedback that come via email, I respond to if the reader had included his/her email address. Comment with user names I respond to by sending a PM. I always thank them for their time spent reading my work and for taking the time to tell me what they think, even if it was negative. Personal attacks I ignore. Mostly. Well, now always.

Some of the best conversations I've ever had about writing have been ones where I left a long thought-filled comment on a story and the writer replied with their own opinions and further questions.

having seen the moronic things people post anonymously I don't bother allowing open comments and the anonymous email ones are in the same category, not worth giving any consideration except to curse at if I could. If someone has no interest in the subject of a story why bother to write and tell the author that you hate that kind of thing. Don't fucking read it and save those few moments of your life instead of doubling up on wasting them. I would accept any criticism from someone with a user name that I could look at and see what they have written or at least favorited.

I try to respond to all comments, though rarely in public. If the commenter leaves their name I write and thank them, or explain something they have queried.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but usually I make anonymous comments; they're never bad and I try to be constructive where necessary. But I'll sign it HP

And even though you do, I can't be sure that it is you, or just the sauce.

So I can't acknowledge your usually much-appreciated comments.

Thank you for them.

At first

I was afraid to reply to commenters who contacted me through my e-mail. I started to at least acknowledge that I'd received their e-mail to me when one sent another a couple of days later and admonished me for not at least doing that much.
If it is from a commenter who has provided an identity other than anon, I'll respond. I haven't had the experience of getting into a thoughtful discussion with any commenter.

If the comment is incorrect, and I allow it to remain, I will answer and leave my comment ther also. For example, I had a story in which one person held another down firmly while he fucked them. A comment told everyone to stay away from my work because it portrayed rape. I did not think it obtuse to point out that thr "bottom had shifted his hips to allow easier access.

So the answer: sometimes i answer and sometimes not. Sometimes i even learnn from comments. Funny thing, though, i don't think i have ever had a constructive comment from "Anony-mass.

It might help if you provided a link to your stories in your signature.

At first I occasionally commented via the open comment section but quickly came to the same realization as oggbashan - no one but a stalker would keep tabs on the comments. I have answered a few by email to thank them, but always felt I was intruding since they didn't use the 'contact' button to send an email directly to me.

I have always answered the direct emails to me - usually within a week or so. I now try to remember to copy and paste their email to me, so they remember which story I'm answering from.

Having read the comments here I think I'll start answering more of the comments via email than I have in the past. Usually I don't get that many, but my last story (in LW) got 40 some and most used their Lit name, very few anons. It might take a while to answer that many.
