‘It’s Not Too Late To Reverse The Alarming Trend Of Climate Change,’ Scientists Who Know It’s Too Late Announce

News in Brief • Science & Technology • ISSUE 50•01 • Jan 8, 2014

GENEVA—With the implementation of tighter carbon emissions caps and more responsible household energy use, it is not too late to reverse the dire course of global warming, a panel of scientists who know full well that it is far too late and we are all doomed told reporters today. “If we all do our part right now to design and enforce more responsible business and environmental practices, there’s still a good chance we can avoid the calamitous consequences of worldwide climate change,” said climatologist Dr. Kevin Little, a man who, deep in his heart, knows all too acutely that it’s over, there’s not a damned thing we can do, and so we might as well just start preparing now for what is certain to be the unprecedented destruction of human civilization at the hands of a ravaged ecosystem. “It will take massive investment and cooperation on a global scale, but I’m optimistic we can be in good shape by around 2030 or so.” The researchers who awake each morning with the grim realization that they are bearing witness to mankind’s sad, inevitable endgame also suggested there is still very much a chance of stabilizing the rapid loss of Arctic sea ice.

Church Of England Takes On ‘Giant Evil’ Of Climate Change:

On Wednesday, the Church of England’s parliamentary body announced that it was considering redirecting its investments in an effort to battle climate change. The motion put forward, which called for the Church to recognize “the damage being done to the planet through the burning of fossil fuels,” received overwhelming support.

“Climate Change is a moral issue because the rich world has disproportionately contributed to it and the poor world is disproportionately suffering,” Canon Goddard said.

According to the Church of England’s official statement, the passing of the motion makes clear that the Church’s investment policies are “aligned with the theological, moral and social priorities” of the Church on climate change.

“The threat of climate change is a giant evil, a great demon of our day,” said the Right Reverend Stephen Croft. “The damage this great demon will do to this beautiful earth if unchecked, is unimaginable.”

The U.K. is currently experiencing the worst rainfall for this time of year in 250 years of records, which has lead to widespread flooding and over 130 severe flood warnings this year. This has inundated homes and communities, cut off transportation links, and may lead to an outbreak in bacterial diseases that thrive in damp conditions.

The Church Commissioners manage around £5.2 billion, or $8.5 billion, in investments. Royal Dutch Shell, BP, BHB Billiton, a mining and petroleum company, and Rio Tinto, another mining company, are all in their top ten investments. The Church’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group aims to keep these investments in align with the broader ethical considerations of the Church.

So my birthday gift is Bill Nye presenting crazy as relevant. . .fine he can live.

true, with gas on the rise. Just leave off the Obama bumper sticker.....how do they do in the snow??

I hear they aren't bad in the snow and ice provided you don't have steep grades to deal with. They could use more clearance, but that might drop the fuel economy on the highway a point or two.

I see a lot of them around here....

Cat parasite found in Arctic Beluga
By Jonathan Amos
Science correspondent, BBC News, Chicago

The cat parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can cause blindness in people, has been identified in Beluga in the western Arctic.

The discovery by University of British Columbia scientists has prompted a health advisory to Inuit people in the region who eat the whale's meat.

Researchers say it is an example of how the warming of the Arctic is allowing the freer movement of pathogens.

Icier conditions in the past acted as an obstruction to infectious agents.

“Ice is a significant ecological barrier and it influences the way in which pathogens can be transmitted in nature and your risk of exposure,” said molecular parasitologist Michael Grigg.

“What we’re finding with the changes ongoing in the Arctic is that we’re getting new pathogens emerging to cause diseases in the region that haven’t been there before,” he told BBC News.

In 2012, Dr Grigg's UBC team showed that a new strain of another parasite, Sarcocystis, was responsible for killing more than 400 grey seals in the North Atlantic. This pathogen had previously been seen only in the Arctic.

Dr Grigg said this was an example of the warming conditions opening up the region to allow more southerly populations of sea mammals to mix with their northern neighbours, and so become exposed to pathogens they would not normally experience.

It's found all over the world already - why should the arctic Beluga-cats get a free ride?

Rep. Marsha Blackburn had the biggest laugh line in the debate this morning.

"Congress has taken action on climate change. We said no to cap & trade."

I think your opinion is in the minority. He makes a good living through public speaking.

He makes a good living on following a script. In a discussion, he can't make a point without stammering and stuttering. The points that woman was trying to make were all over the place and he missed his chance of making a cogent argument.

Honestly someone needs to wipe that smug look off that cunts face. I hate her with a passion.

One could be forgiven for wondering what the fuss is all about.

The climate continues to change?

No fucking shit, Sherlock.

What do you propose to do about it? It's been changing for roughly 4 billion years now. The fact of the matter is that neither you nor anybody else knows why.

One could be forgiven for not knowing what the hell one is talking about.

It really is a commonwealth of morons. Where else can somebody who's supposed to be a scientist get away with making an utterly idiotic statement such as this:

“Weather practically everywhere is being caused by climate change.”

Do you want me to pick apart your graphs one by one, or can you just look up when I did it before?

"...What is being communicated is so obviously not science, but scientifically absurd scare tactics that just make people point and laugh..."

The game is over. The jig is up. They tried to induce panic. They failed.

When it was warming, the reason was CO2 and climate was simple;
now that it’s not warming, the reason isn’t known and climate is complex.
