I'm reading it and while great, each book is longer than the previous. Glad I have an e-reader!

I saw a quote somewhere that Martin is having a hard time wrapping it up...so take heart, the pros have the same issues. Insert Stephen King comment here...

FYI, the porn version is Game of Bones.

You gotta visit the GoT threads in the AH (which usually start in April coinciding with the HBO series). There's a lot of constructive thought on the characters and progression of the story, relative to the books and the shows. The show, if you haven't watched, only deviates the slightest from the books, and IMHO, are really handled well.

It's a powerful series, and I love that it can hold so much damn tension based on mostly the political power struggle in the story.

I liked that you included the bit about Martin struggling with the "wrapping up". We're all human after all.

Look for us in April, Jomar. (But uh, the thread follows the shows, so make sure you read the shit outta that series to avoid spoilers. The next season should pick up midway 3rd book, maybe mixing some 4th into it, we ain't sure. ;) ).

I'm sure Martin has genuine issues completing his books, but it is frustrating as a reader of the series for nearly 20 years seeing other non-GoT projects he does complete. He edits various anthologies, writes other books, revises books that were published prior to A Song of Ice and Fire, plus all the time he devotes to the television show. Two books to go, and I'm betting he doesn't see the end.

I recently tried to read the first GoT book and couldn't get into it. (I kept thinking Martin had a lousy editor). I may try to pick it up again and read it later on.

You could try the audio book versions instead. They are narrated by Roy Dotrice and are actually quite good.

I use audio books a lot. You can "read books" while driving and mowing the lawn and stuff...

I guess youre not speaking of Martin Arrowsmith. Good book.

Sometimes you just need to take a break from one thing and come back to it later with fresh eyes.

He says two books to go but can we believe him seeing that originally he was aiming for a trilogy.

I love the books though a feast for crows really faultered for me and seemed like a lot of filler. Wife won't read the books but has really fallen for the show she's more excited than I am about season four (second half of book three)

Yeah so far the seasons have coincided with each book (season 1, book 1 etc.) Until the third, of course, which ended halfway through book 3. There was a lot of discussion here about that and the Feast of Crows deal.

I was wondering how they would do Book 4 (Feast) for the show. I mean, many of you know how "different" it is. Since they ended halfway through Storm of Swords, I was thinking maybe they might sprinkle in pieces of Book 4 into this coming season with the last half of Book 3, to keep interest and all without sacrificing the characters we love for a whole season. After all, unless I'm mistaken, a lot of Book 4 takes place at the same time as Book 3. Having Oberyn and the Sand Snakes plotline in the same season may keep things tied together nicely.

Ah, oh well. Have to wait til April. As for Martin's procrastination, I can see where a writer would want to take a good break from something so complex and work on other things. When he does come around and get back to SOIF series, I'm sure things will be incredible. He's a pretty talented guy and a great builder of worlds and drama.

The current trailers don't give much away from what is seen it looks firmly in book 3 territory. I think they need to mix books 4 and five together and trim some of the fat and still be left with enough for two seasons possibly three.

Edited to say maybe we will see more of book 4 as they already brought the Reek storyline forward and one new trailer for season 4 shows a rather clean, suited and booted Theon Greyjoy riding a horse :)

Oh dear lord game of bones is actually real!!!!

I have attached three pics below of a few characters to ease anyone else's curiosity

Thanks, I will SC.

I messed up. There's a waiting list at the e-library and I forgot to reserve 4 before I finished 3.

There does seem to be a good bit of bloat in the books, but it goes down pretty smooth.

Haha, thanks for the pics DW.

I have read all the books...and I love the show...it is so heart-breakingly true to real life....:rose:

The thing to remember about GRR Martin is that no one is safe and the readers affinity for any character is not a lock that he won't kill them too! Great story, but the time between books gets incredibly frustrating especially when his promise by dates are usually a few years off, and then he is constantly on his website talking about all of the other projects he immerses himself in. Finally, he is not the model of health, so the loyal readers are always wondering whether we will know how this incredible tale turns out... or will he take it to his grave.... Otherwise, great books! :)

This is what I'm talking about. Look at the publication dates:

A Game Of Thrones - 1996

A Clash Of Kings - 1998

A Storm Of Swords - 2000

A Feast For Crows - 2005

A Dance With Dragons - 2011

This is why I worry.

I have read that GRRM and HBO have worked out an end to the TV series, in case of various things. In case HBO has to cancel the series before the books are finished, in case GRRM cannot finish, etc.

I'm more concerned about the books finishing than the TV series. I never had any hope that the series would still be on when the last book published.

Actually it has alot of sex and porn

All big authours thank their editors for helping them rewrite their story until they think it is perfect.

You think those release dates are bad! Check out these for a 10 book series called the chronicles of Thomas Covenent...I have yet to finish books nine and ten but getting there.

Lord fouls bane -1977
The illearth war - 1978
The power that preserves - 1979
The wounded land - 1980
The one tree -1982
White gold weilder - 1983

There is then an ELEVEN year wait

The ruins of earth - 2004
The fatal revenant - 2007
Against all things ending - 2010
The last dark - 2013

Let's hope Martin does not make us wait eleven years for the winds of winter.

An author doesn't necessarily keep a constant pace through a series. Check out Stephens Kings opus magnum Dark Tower for instance...

The Gunslinger (1982)

zzzz... 4 years

The Drawing of the Three (1987)

zzzz... 3 years

The Waste Lands (1991)

zzzz... 5 years

Wizard and Glass (1997)

zzzz... 5 years

Wolves of the Calla (2003)
Song of Susannah (2004)
The Dark Tower (2004)

After Wizard and Glass I had pretty much accepted the fact that either Stephen or I was gonna die before getting to the end of the series. But in 2003 the guy went ape and squirted out the rest of the books over just two years!

I can easily imagine that George R.R. Martin could need a break from the pressure and thus has slowed down his pace for a while. The guy has enough cash to do whatever he pleases. But in the the end he will get going again and maybe even do a Dark Tower squirt... the writing-bug cannot be ignored. :)

Getting run over probably gave him the wake up call he needed to finish the series....still amongst my favourite King works to date.
