Basically everyone is angry at the GOP

Let's review what the Republican government shutdown accomplished:

  • Obamacare will not be repealed.
  • Obamacare will not be defunded.
  • Obamacare will not be delayed.
  • The individual mandate will not be delayed.
  • The medical-device tax will not be repealed.
  • The health-insurance subsidies given to members of Congress and their staffs will not be taken away.

Can somebody tell me what the Republicans DID get?
Besides a world-class ass-kicking?

A new star called Ted Cruz. Until that flavor of the week is gone.

Elections have consequences. Get off your ass and do something about 2014.

Bring the pain, motherfucker.

We kicked your ass in 2008 and 2012. You managed to gerrymander the 2010 elections.

We just kicked your ass on the government shutdown as well.

But... but...

Eh. Fuck 'em.

Polls show that most Americans don't know who Ted Cruz is, but when they find out they don't like him.

It's enough. To win elections, you don't need to be perceived as a good choice, but only as the better or least-bad choice.

That's often true. However, the over all numbers seem to point to an increasing number of voters thinking this best-of-a-bad-lot crap isn't working out so well.

Or as one person said, "Vote Cthulhu. Why pick the lesser evil?"

Brit Hume just thoroughly trashed the Tea Party. It's a good day. :)

Pissed off the general electorate but are now probably more secure in their heavily gerrymandered home districts?
Defined the terms of the debate?
Lost control of the GOP to a radicalized, ideologically driven minority.

I dunno. Right now the news is about what concessions/promises are going to be needed to get short term funding and a raise in the debt ceiling. You tell me. What did they get?

From all reports, it seems the Republicans got nothing.

NOTHING.

Good thing you're not a Republican then.

So what did the Democrats get?

Nothing.

This whole stink was because the Republicans tried to extort legislation from the majority party who didn't want it. Their plan failed. We'll be right back where we started. And Obamacare will go on as planned.

I suppose the Republican House will go back to passing more symbolic Obamacare repeal bills.

So this whole thing boils down to who got more or less of nothing?
They're gonna have to raise the absurdity limit along with the debt ceiling.

Okay, real quick summary:

  • The House and Senate cannot agree on a budget
  • To prevent default, "Continuing Resolutions" are used when both parties cannot agree
  • The Rapepublicans attempted to hold the "continuing resolution" process hostage to extract concessions from the Democrats, because they lack the votes to otherwise enact their agenda
  • The Democrats stiffened their spine, something the Rapepublicans did not expect
  • The Rapepublicans therefore lost their high-risk, high-reward strategem

Now, if you want to spin that as somehow a defeat for both parties, by all means use your delusion. However, I suspect most people will disagree with your characterization , and some of the less civilized folks here (myself included) will laugh in caustic derision at your little fantasy.

Wasn't "my" delusion. You said the GOP got nothing, Merc said the Democrats got nothing.

I do keep up with the news. And there are a lot of stories in the news on this topic.

So what, in your point of view, did the Democrats 'win'? You're pretty clear about what the GOP lost, but what was gained for the other side?

The GOP got much less than nothing out of this. They lost ground and credibility.

Anything less than a defunding of ACA is an abject failure on their part. Now, they look incompetent for charging into an unwinnable battle.

we must have more welfare....more welfare we must

Probably less secure in their gerrymandered districts. Many of those were formed by the "cracking" method, meaning in each the Pubs are a majority but the district is not solid-red. Anything that fires up the Dem minority and independents and moderate Pubs against the TP wing can put such a district in serious play. And this spectacle ought to do it.

Merc said the Democrats got nothing.

The democrats didn't want anything either because they already had the ACA.

The GOP got basically nothing in the negotiations. Their plan failed. They lost credibility with Americans across the political spectrum.

You're presuming every situation dictates a "win" or a "loss".

If you want to get technical, the Democrats have "won" the status quo, which allows Obamacare to be funded and go into effect as planned.

This is an absolute rout for the "do over" caucus in the Republican party.

Given the number of failed attempts to kill ACA, abject failure must play pretty well in their home districts. It seems like there are fewer Republicans but more ideologically driven conservatives. Maybe a party purge is what they're after. Plenty of right wingers on the GB would seem to be okay with that.

Suppose they go into to these attempts knowing they won't get ACA repealed or defunded and the "win" is forcing the confrontation in the first place? You know, like a kid will throw a tantrum to get attention or some consolation prize for not getting it all his own way to start. As long as he gets anything but ignored or isolated until he learns how to behave better, he's gonna keep on throwing tantrums. And it doesn't seem like the Representatives behind this are going to get much in the way of censure from their own party or even much voter backlash in their home districts.

At any rate, it's a bit silly to go around declaring winners and losers at this point. The electorate will do that in 13 months, during the off-year elections. Those usually don't favor the party in the White House and are often characterized by low voter turn-out.

Don't forget, the deal for temporary funding still hasn't gone through. Call me cynical, but even the best case scenario here is to be watching Federal Budgetfuck, the sequel, coming to political theater this January. At this point it might as well be a regular telenovella, except with really shitty scriptwriters and no hot latina babes.
