Beginner looking for some toys

We are just starting out, and I would like to get some toys. I don't want to get cheap stuff that is dangerous or will fall apart, but I also don't want to spend top dollar on high end custom stuff (at least, not yet). I'd like to get decent quality at a good price.

With that in mind, I have some questions.

Collars, I am thinking a smaller one in leather that's only 3/4" - 1" wide, and then another that's 2.5" - 3" wide. I don't want them to be uncomfortable or rough that will rub her skin raw. Any suggestions on good quality gear?

To go with the above, some leather wrist cuffs would be nice.

I'm also thinking that a flogger might be fun. Any suggestions? I don't want to get junk.

Now about butt plugs. So, how erotic is this for the woman. I understand with men, there is the stimulation of the prostate, but does this do much to enhance female sensation? I'm not thinking long term wear, just during play. So would something that vibrates or that can vibrate be better than just a plug or is a plug adequate? I was thinking something in stainless. I understand that pthalates are bad. I believe safety-wise, the best would be surgical silicone, glass or stainless.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for folks that are getting in on the ground floor? (I know, that opens up the flood gates)

Thanks for suggestions

Good evening! I would suggest a remote control bullet, they can be a lot of fun! as for collars, I might recommend the 1" in leather. Or you may purchase a choker that could double as a collar.
Spencers has a nice selection of toys as does Adam and Eve. check if your partner has allergies before buying any toys! No need to have a reaction to something, latex perhaps, if it could have been avoided. Definitely talk to your partner about their interests! Butt plugs come in all sizes, so I would start out small. Hope this helps..

Please, first watch the video I posted in this thread about dangerous toys.

Personally, I love my Hitachi Magic Wand. It is the best thing I have ever bought. There are attachments as well. Check amazon for a good deal (I got a package deal with 2 attachments, one I reserve for anal play)

I love to use a riding crop, a good and less expensive one can be found at a tack store. Pet supply stores actually have some nice collars.
Rope from the hardware store is cheaper than leather cuffs. It only takes basic knot tying to bind wrists behind back.

Only your partner can tell you what she may want or what she's curious to try. Maybe a trip to a good sex shop would give you ideas.

Thanks all. We've got something similar to the Magic Wand already.

Good suggestion about the pet store.

I've actually got some rope and a knowledge of some basic knots. ;)

I was just wanting to jazz things up a bit more.

I'll definitely check out that video!

I'm just getting started and have found that house hold items can work pretty well. Maybe it doesn't have the best look but it's inexpensive and works. I like bobby pins for nipples and satin sashes for bondage. ^_^ There are a lot of sites dedicated to showing you how to use what you have or make custom gear. Since I'm working with a budget, this works for me for now. Mister, I think has a Christmas list in the works.

I'm sure lots of good stuff can be made or found around the house, but part of the appeal of some of the stuff is visual, at least for me.

Besides, if I've got to go out driving all over town to buy $20 worth of materials, then spend time putting stuff together, or I can buy some of the stuff for $40. I'd rather spend the $40.

You can go to a BDSM toy store and pay big bucks for a crop, but you can usually go to a tack shop that sells items to horse trainers/riders and get it cheaper. And usually the quality will be better. Web sites are the same way.

A good crop, riding whip or dressage can end up getting a lot of use, so you need to think about quality. Riding and training aficionados expect something to last and we BDSMers shouldn't be any different.

If you get a flogger, make sure it's of good quality. There are many in the lifestyle that make their own toys and some make them for sale. If you have a local BDSM group in your area, they might be able to connect you with a group member that makes them. Someone who personally makes each one will think about quality as well as beauty.

Then, once you get your toys, make sure you take care of them. They last longer, when you do.

As an avid equestrian (like, with actual horses, not Pony Play), I cannot agree more with the suggestion to go to a tack sore/similar for something like a crop or a dressage whip. Even if it is more expensive than whatever sex store you use, I GUARANTEE YOU, the tack store has better quality.

For-horse crops and whips are built to last in dirty tack rooms, covered in sweat, and being smacked against a half ton+ animal. What do you think a sex toy crop is built for?

If you don't want to track down a tack store, you can just do a google for "cheap horse tack" or whatever. Honestly, you'll probably find a cheaper horse crop than a sex-toy-crop that way and it will STILL be better quality. The Caveat to that is that there is a LOT of variety in the feel of horse crops.whips (feel to the user and the usee). A LOT, enough that I outright refuse to use some and others I refuse to lend out EVER. Some are whippy, some are more like "bats", and I've used a few dressage whips that felt more like noodles! With crops, it's easier to tell the difference (obviously, the really short crops are unlikely to be whippy), but dressage whips can vary as well and you can't necessarily tell just looking.

I do think this variety (in addition to the durability and quality) is a HUGE plus to shopping for a crop/dressage-whip at a tack store, but it can be a bit overwhelming if you want to be picky. If you're not particular, though, there's no need to be and the variety can become fun! Hell, we even have horse-head shapes, heart shapes, etc...! :p Not to mention, if you're willing to dish out some extra $$, some of the nice (show quality) dressage whips don't have any covering as well, just straight stingy core...

For future reference, when you're ready to invest in a quality flogger, I can't say enough good things about Snakepit Leather. The work is gorgeous and they absolutely live up to the descriptions given. Master and I have been very happy with the goodies we've gotten from them.

Don't under estimate your own creativity, While Kitten (Not to be confused with Loverskitten) and I have purchased a few of our own toys. I have also made or had made a few of our favorites. As the others have stated, if your are going to purchase anything look at the quality of the item and not the price.

For collars and cuffs (as well as leashes-- we've been eyeing theirs for a while) I've had nothing but good experiences with Collar Factory. Each piece is made-to-order, and they have mind-boggling levels of customization for materials, decoration, and colors. If you're not into the red and black--I know I'm not--stereotypical leather look, then this is a goldmine for you. Odds are pretty good that you're getting a one-of-a-kind piece too, if you put some thought into your design, which is always something I've loved. You can expect to pay around $40-50 for something from them.

Do a web search for "DIY BDSM", and find lots of fun projects that weren't covered at summer camp. There's even a book on the topic.

Also, around here, "tack store" means feed store, or farm store.

Thanks, lots more good info. I'll check out what you have all offered.

I'm fairly handy so making my own stuff is a good possibility. I'm planning to make a spreader bar (meant to today, but didn't get around to it).

Honestly, if feel turned on going out buying things to make into more devious items. Just the other day I went to my craft store to buy buttons and ribbon. :) The whole time I was in the store I couldn't help but think, "these buttons and ribbon are going to make the prettiest looking cuffs."

On the outside I knew it just looked like I was getting pretty accents for my latest vanilla crochet project. I got home pretty turned on, I finished my cuffs. They work and only fit me.

Is your Avatar pic, the cuffs you made? If so nice job.

^_^ Yes! Thank you, I was so excited I made them and they work! It was also a coincidence that I finished them just after I became eligible for the avatar option.

Just wait till you play hard in them...

I made leather cuffs out of latigo, thinking-- hey, it's thick, it's leather, two rivets should be enough... I put them on a lady who liked to wriggle and she disproved my design in a matter of minutes.

Back to the drawing board!

I made these with the intention that they wouldn't be used for hard play. ^_^ We have other arrangements for that. These are more for gentler play and my need for pretty things.

I am looking to improve this design and will make adjustments for something more heavy duty. Thus, nylon yarn/cord and metal brackets for future projects. I think these projects will be later when I have more time to really work out the logistics.

I would suggest not spending a fortune on toys from BDSM stores. You can fashion your own tools and implements the same as I did:

Collars: You can get some good deals on ebay for dog collars; some of them have rings attached to give you a leash-like grip with a chain or rope

Ropes and Chain: Most hardware stores can supply you a clunky chain or nylon ropes.

Tapes: Don't buy fancy tapes, the regular ones are just fine.

Floggers: I use a plastic broom used to clean electronic devices that was bought from a supermarket. It had dark bristles and I only had to trim the sharp edges to make them soft and sensuous on the skin. It really works.

Household belts: They serve dual purpose of flogging and strap-ons

Paddles and horizontal bars: Available at most supermarkets

Colors and dyes: Available at stationery shops

Hoodies, masks and armlets: Can be fashioned using old clothes and leather jackets

The only thing I would invest is BDSM jewelry; bracelets, rings, piercings etc.
