You could use Google docs and store it in Google Drive. That way you don't have a local copy on your computer and only you can access the remote file.

Recently joined and really enjoying the site. So much so, that I am considering writing my own story at some point ...

Does anyone know if I can use Lit to privately store my story draft as I create it? So no-one else sees it, but I can work on it via the Lit platform, and hence don't need to store a local copy on my computer.

I could just send myself PMs, but that would be cumbersome.

Any thoughts?

Almost any 'cloud-based' system will work, but be aware that anything you put in the cloud may be subject to inspection by a variety of authorities.
I suggest, however, that you story your draft text on a CD or similar such as a USB stick.
Should security be a real requirement, there are several 'Encryption' programmes (DESLock, for example).

I keep my stories on a USB drive. I don't encrypt, but I give the files coded names that are indecipherable to anyone but me. They are kept in a folder with a generic name that looks like all the other folders on the drive.

Funny thing about those generic names... I've been keeping a small assortment of rather bizarre filth in a folder named 'project 4' for years, and a few weeks ago, realised that 'project 4' is the name of the institution it all happens in. I've been writing ever since.

Plot bunnies, eh? You never know where they'll turn up.

I definetly understand the need for not wanting to save anything on the computer.

Personally, I use AOL and just email the stories to myself. Obviously I copy & paste whenever I want to continue.

Google Docs was mentioned, and that's an excellent way of writing stories. Everything saves automatically, it's a word processor.

That's not true. For example a psychiatrist who works with children may find their career in jeopardy if it was found out they write erotica especially if it was incest or non consent or fetish.

Same can be said of a teacher or one of many careers where the writing of erotica could cause people to be concerned about them.

You can talk tough about "shame" but throwing away a good job with a good income over dirty stories is just plain stupid.

If there was never anything to worry about then why does everyone write under pen names? For that matter why don't we all post under our real names here?

Some people like their hobbies to be private, not easy in the ultimate age of big brother.

As LC said, most of the time it's not a matter of shame, rather one of getting in trouble because of it. Another instance I can think of is only having access to a family computer where you wouldn't want everyone in your family discovering it.

Honestly, just broaden your mind a little.

That's right.

Can you imagine all the people who know me as the anti social, sarcastic, rude satanist would think if they knew I wrote porn.

Would just destroy my social status!

But in the vein of the thread, my wife works in the medical field and has her own business where she does deal with teenagers so I do keep it secret, for her sake, not mine.
