I think I'd like to be the next pope. I could put that pope hat in my lap and people won't know what I'm thinking.

I think your thoughts are a bit too long drawn-out for the pope hat, better stick with the lovely wooly thing I promised to knit you. ;)

Yeah, you're right. Your's is probably more absorbent. I don't want the milk of human kindness running down my forehead when I put the pope hat back on.

Well, first ever Jesuit to become a Pope. I suppose it's nearly as good as first woman.

We in Britain knew it would be the Argentinian. We have seen the Hand of God at work before. ;)

Oh haven't we just.

Seeing the first woman priest, let alone Cardinal would be something.

It might just be phonic blur, but whenever I hear the word Jesuit, I think of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood...

I don't think it is phonic blur. There was probably a real connection in the author's mind. Personally, although the word Gesserit has echoes of Jesuit, I think Opus Dei is a more likely source if from the Catholic Church.

But there are many other semi-secret societies that could have been the inspiration starting with Freemasons...

OK, now the Fella has taken to texting me - from the living room to moan about water coming in the house. (Waking me up.) Now from his bed to apologise for texting from the living room.

Better take him coffee.

We live in a house facing a junction so the weather comes sweeping down the open road opposite onto our frontage. We just had it done so he probably has a right to feel aggrieved that water is coming in the living-room. But I wish he would wait till the morning when I could reasonably phone the builder (if it weren't Super Saturday! LOL) rather than text me about it at midnight.

Frank Herbert blended a lot of conspiratorial religious agencies when he created the backdrop for Dune. I think he was dissociating himself when he placed the timeline at 10,000 plus years ano domini. It gave him room to condemn organized religion while advocating their central beliefs.
