I usually do something for my wife earlier. That takes some of the "it's just what's expected of the day" out of it. This year the roses died early, though, so I see another round needed--unless the cruise tickets I drop on the 15th with suffice. She thinks we're marking it by going to a concert Friday night.

Mr Penn and I have obtained stuff for the kids, but will do something else for ourselves. Quite frankly, I'm celebration-ed out at this point. Christmas, New Years, three birthdays in January, five or six in February on top of Val-Day. At least I went out a couple of weeks ago and bought all the cards for everyone at one time, that saved a little stress.

I also find it more relaxing to do a dinner out or something like that on a different day -- it's too crowded on the day.

After 40 years, my wife prefers not to have flowers, nor go out for a meal, on Valentine's Day. She thinks the flowers are too expensive in February, and the service in restaurants on Valentine's Day is probably the worst of the whole year.

She likes flowers at other times, and restaurants when the staff aren't overworked.

But she still appreciates a Valentine's card in the morning.

V-day itself will not be so hot. The wife had to reschedule a workshop because of the storm and its tomorrow night so she is working until nine(and a surprising amount of people signed up for it) and I am in New Jersey tomorrow for a presentation for work.

So we're doing Saturday and I also avoid flowers because for me they are too cliched for V-day and I like to give them at random times.

Fortunately Alex and Ani which is huge here in RI(with the corporate headquarters being here especially) has provided an endless array of default gifts for any occasion.

Of course all their bracelets are around the $30 range, but not the V-day Love bracelet this one is $50

I don't usually buy "traditional themed" cards, but usually just pick up a generic mushy card, but I am at a point as I look at them I start to wonder, "Did I get this one before?"
