The cheap ones are made to wear out after a few years - I've killed half a dozen, lol. Another common failure method is breaking the wires in a bullet, I just did that last week. Personally I like having the excuse to try new ones whenever I need to replace an old one. I have a box of new ones due in the mail any day now. Usually only half of them are any good, but at under $20 each and most under $15 it's not a big deal to buy several.
