Why do you write erotica?

To master the subject, to grab the reader another way.

The best writers replicate the experience so that the reader feels, vicariously, what the character feels; so there's no need to explain whats happening. Place the characters in the scene, replicate the experience, and let the reader have his feelings and reactions.

Good point. I think that's one of the main challenges in writing erotica, but I was more interested in why people write erotica, not how to erotica.

Why do I write erotica?

Because it is easy and fun. That's it in a nutshell.

I've got a few mainstream novels out and they are not nearly as much fun to write. Although I do try to push the old fade to black as far as I can. My editor thinks it's funny but then again they found me on Lit, even if it was in the non-erotic section.

She lets more slide than most but then the legal department gets in on the act and...

I still write here for fun.

Why I Write

I write and post here to practice

I have several stories and have had a multitude of comments. Very few were constructive but those did help

I wanted to know if I could produce a real character and believable dialog.

Some must have enjoyed the stories and I believe they have helped me become more aware in my editing...

That to me is the hardest part of writing

Just my thoughts

Jack

The legal department? Hahaha!

I used to be a contributor on a news-satire site a few years ago. Our crowning achievement was having our site blocked on the State of Michigan servers for being "in bad taste" and "potentially dangerous."

Regardless, and especially on the professional projects I work on, I always write for my audience.

Well, since you asked, I write erotica because it's fun.
I started writing just over a year ago, and found that the only thing that kept my attention long enough to finish the story was sex or sexual intrigue.
Also, I loved adventure stories and had always found them sexy. I think it was a natural progression from reading some of my favourite authors into what I write. I don't mean quality, I mean theme.

One day I'll try to write more mainstream fiction again. But I think I'll always dabble in erotica in one way or another.

Its why I write erotica. My post isnt a goddamned tutorial, fool.

I just posted an essay on Why I Write Erotica. I'm curious to know why others write.

Whole bunch of reasons. I enjoy writing generally because it gives me a creative outlet. As to why erotica specifically, a couple of reasons...

I have Aspie tendencies, which means I don't have good instincts for how people interact with one another. To understand that stuff I have to sit and work it through, and writing is a good exercise for that. For me, writing about a relationship is a bit like solving a cryptic crossword - challenging and fatiguing, but good mental exercise.

I'm particularly interested in sex as part of a broader human interaction. It's sometimes hard to find stories that handle it that way - a lot of porn fixates on the physical choreography so much that it forgets everything else - so I write what I want to read. Most of the interaction in my stories is not overtly sexual; I probably spend more time on G-rated chitchat than on sexually explicit content. But it's all part of the same story.

I also write for my partners, who enjoy the stories I tell. One is a very long-distance relationship; we haven't been in the same country for over a year, and I don't know when we're going to get together again, so sending her stories is one way that we maintain that connection.

Very interesting reasons. I'm curious to know if you read and write has helped you better understand how others respond and react to each other physically, mentally and emotionally.

Hard to tell - I don't know how to measure that. But I do find it interesting regardless of whether it's making me any better at it.

I started out of boredom- I was 20 years old, stuck in a house by myself all day with a baby, in a town where I knew no one and had no connection with the outside world, apart from the occasional call from a friend and my computer.

So I wrote, and what I ended up writing was amusing little porn stories for my friends online. My marriage started to crumble and I was in a pretty dark place in my head, so the writing got darker. I crossed the line into very dark more than a few times- most of which ended up on Lit and were later removed when I was in a better place. I wish I hadn't taken them down- I no longer have copies of some of those pieces.

Now I write for a lot of reasons- part of it is boredom and restless creativity that needs an outlet I no longer have. Part of it is ego- I know that what I write is better that some of the best-sellers out there, not just technically, but in overall plot, character and execution. And a tiny, itty-bitty piece of it is hope that I'll eventually get it together enough to sell something in such a way that my boys never have to worry about how to pay for school, lol.

I write erotica because I have ideas for stories that won't leave me alone until I write them into a story! ;)

I just posted an essay on Why I Write Erotica. I'm curious to know why others write.

I started writing erotica just to see if I could, then to see if I could do it reasonably well.

I've kept going because of the positive feedback I've received from those who have read my stories, from the rush I get knowing people are reading what I've written, but mostly because it is such a different activity from my public life and so outside what people would expect from me. I kind of like that dichotomy.

Because I can.

Sorry, that's not much of an answer, but I don't have anything else. I didn't dream of writing when I was a kid and I don't have hundreds of stories filling my head. I didn't decide to write because I couldn't find the type story I enjoyed, I wasn't bored, and no one encouraged me to begin writing erotica. I write erotica, as well as other genres, because I can.

Well, that was a romantic read. :)

I describe my process a bit here in The Writer. It's partly fiction, partly true.

The fictional part is the marriage break-up. Oh yes, and the part about meeting another writer in person and fucking them. Maybe one day, huh?

I suppose the longer answer is that I write because I can make a story do what I want, not what some other author wants. It is also interesting to find out more about plot development, dialogue, and so on.

Then the competitions (and the stats for them) provide some interesting extra material, like what genres are most popular, which ones get people worked up the most, stuff like that.

What's interesting, too, is finding what other people find erotic. That is, a story you write (or have in your head) you might think is fantastic, but few others agree. But if you write something, and people say "that was hot" then it feels good.

I write it because I'm good at it, I enjoy it, and it's a great way to pass the time. Describing something that seems overwritten in a new way is very enjoyable to me.

I just enjoy the feelings when I write something erotic, I write for my own enjoyment, I know the effect they have on people, because they tell me I make them cum. That to me is my reason for writting, If I can make my self cum, then readers will have the same effect.

I havent picked up the courage yet to submit a story on Lit, one day I will

Neat story. Although I'm not much into middle-aged men and much younger girls, I thought the way you broached the taboo was pretty hot.

I'm curious ... why is fucking a writer a fantasy of yours?

It was never a fantasy of mine, but it just turned out that the man who turned out to be a wonderful friend and now my lover just happens to be a writer. Or should I say writing is something we both enjoy and enjoy talking about an awful lot ... and not just erotica. However, because we both write erotica, we both have wild and crazy imaginations that we let loose sexually and in the "outside" lives that we share.

I have to admit that I like knowing that my writing and other predilections would come as quite a shock to people who know me. It's kind of a fun secret to keep.

Apart from the fact that your story was romantic? For one thing, as you described, if you were looking for a partner (maybe without realizing it even) then you have a method for discussing sex without sounding sleazy. Like, "what do you think of this for my next plot?".

I know of virtually no-one who talks about sex in any form, let alone stuff like BDSM or some of the kinkier things. So you would know up front that you could at least talk about things without shocking your friend/partner. They might say "no, thanks, not into that", but at least they wouldn't say "eww, that's disgusting to even think about!".

It's a situation I don't think would ever come my way again. Aside from writing, there are many other interests we share ... music, food, wine, politics ...

However, everything, including erotica, has lead us to sharing an open, respectful dialogue, not to mention the way we communicate during our most intimate times.

Between my lover and I, there have been times when both of us have said, "I can't imagine doing that." It's OK. Neither one of us have ever pushed the other to do something they couldn't imagine doing or doesn't feel right. I can't say that has ever been the case with anyone else.

But what I was originally trying to get at was that I think if anyone else I know knew what I was into, they'd be completely shocked. I've often been told that I come off as very proper and polite.

It's an amusing thought, MsQuote. It would be like finding my mother-in-law wrote erotica (or was you, ha).

Although every now and then she says something that makes me go "huh?". It's like she isn't quite as straight as she looks.

I started writing erotica as a "treat" for my wife.

For years the two of us have enjoyed "story time" when we go to bed. We take turns and every night one of us describes a nasty little scenario while we fool around.

A couple of years back she had a job that had her training out of state every weekend for three months. She kept lamenting that she missed out on her stories.

Of course we would do it over the phone, but one night out of the blue, I was struck by a great idea, but it was a few hours before she was due to call.

in order not to "lose the mood" on the story, I wrote it out. I then ended up going with something else, but when she came home read it to her.

She loved it and I started writing one every weekend for something for her to look forward to.

After awhile she found this site and after reading some of the stories said my stuff was just as good so why not try it?
