As The Hospital Pervs

It's a case of work-you-out is cheaper than hiring more staff. It's not right or safe and in the end it costs more money.

And without asking? That is just rude.

Ugh. I hate, hate, HATE mandatory OT. We try to decrease the OT by hiring more staff, but can't find anybody who will come work here! (That's CNAs, nursing we get about 300 applicants for each opening.) And we even PROVIDE the CNA class - for free, and pay standard hourly wage for it.

Hope you're getting through it OK - get a good night's sleep! (Oh, and some Ben & Jerry's never hurts!)

and.... I hope you are getting enough rest so that you have time for fun ;);)

I am tempted to write the fight but I don't get paid to write about unstable staffing and hospital acuity.

The good news is: I am still new enough (in my new home) to escape team leadership!
I am not lucky enough to escape: Code blue nurse, and rapid response duty for the whole hospital. Fuckers.

Ah, that is so bad. Nothing like working til you just feel you're going to drop.
Above all, be careful going home.

They will never label it mandatory because it looks bad on paper, but scheduled overtime seems mandated to me. It's not like I can just not show up for the fourth shift.

CNA jobs are hard work so I am not surprised. The pay needs to be more. We couldn't function without the CNA. We don't have CNAs, we have CCT (critical care techs) that function as a CNA. They are highly skilled in my unit and valued. I hope they take care of you. :rose:

I will take care.

The drop doesn't fall till I get home. The adrenalin tears the body up and keeps it going for a while. It doesn't feel good. I will go light on the coffee and heavy on the protein and water. Thanks!

My current unit takes very good care of us. The unit I used to work on, in the residential end, not so much.

For us, "scheduled" and "mandatory" are two different things - the scheduled OT we sign up for. If they can't fill a hole that way, or for holes caused by call-ins, they mandate. There's been a lot more of that since Governor Douchebag took away our unions.

Shift change, night nurse says to me: "I tried to insert a rectal tube. It fell out, it didn't work. I have never seen an anal opening so large before."

I think it's a bunch of fecal incontinence drainage bags filled with infectious diarrhea.

I know the policy and we do not have mandatory over time. They just schedule us over without asking. Now I know.

Today was not a good day.

Watching a six year old have 20 seizures in a 8 hour shift is exhausting for everyone involved. Even worse when you know we could help him, but his mom won't allow any anti-seizure meds because of what she read on the internet.

yikes.... and I'm sure that what she read took into account every aspect of his specific body chemistry etc.... right..... :(

Isn't there a lot of studies that have helped people understand that the cumulative effect of seizures can leave some degree of damage to the brain?

A staff neurologist told me once that EVERY seizure does some amount of brain damage. I'm hoping our attending can talk some sense into her tomorrow at the discharge meeting.

I hope so, too. It takes all kinds, right?

and a child's health lies in the balance....
