At bottom their position is "everything would be fine if we just got government out of the social safety net business and let churches and families take care of their own". They recognize, either consciously or unconsciously, that humans can't survive free markets alone. Their insistence on strong families and churches is just the flip side of their insistence on laissez faire.

The problem with that is that the free market is highly corrosive to families.
