39 medals from the top, dude. That's a lot of medals...old chap

Perhaps but Team GB is drawn from a population equivalent to the sum of several US states.

The US team's achievement compared to China is magnificent for 300 million against 1.3 billion people.

Probably true, but the home city usually goes all out for their hometown fans. China did it, I expect Brazil to do the same.

Frankly, medal counts means nothing to me, its not worth bragging about.

There is a considerable advantage in being the host nation. That country's olympians get more support than they would normally get - financial and otherwise. They have the majority of the spectators behind them, and usually perform better than they have ever done before.

As for medal counts? The difference between a medal and fourth place could be a split second, a couple of points, a single decision. When a race is won in world record time, the fourth place might have run faster than the gold medallist at the previous Olympics - and still get no medal.

So some of the lottery money can now be spent on worthwhile causes instead of 'sport' ?

London did a good job....I enjoyed it.

Yeah it was fun, I can't be bothered to snipe the Olympics for whatever reason. This is the first time I really got into it and just enjoyed the athleticism. It's impossible to ignore the politics and economics of such an event but I'm going to try anyway, just this once. I enjoyed what I saw; the triumphs, the failures, the dodgy playing, the blade man!, London not being horrible for once. It was all good.

Allison Stokke especially. Thanks USA. :D

The games

I thought it was a very good games. I love the athletes and the competition. It is also a good time to watch something that maybe isn't so main stream, for me anyway. Like fencing, judo or artistic gymnastic. Huge fan of the equestrian events too.

If we're going to speak medals per capita, New Zealand kicked all our asses.

Except maybe some tiny caribbean island.
