The Official Author's Hangout Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

I have slowed down a little but I still expect to have my entry ready to submit by Aug. 20. It may be as long as I anticipated but it will be submitted.

Rain on a metal roof? Mark Twain's essay on New England weather has this paragraph:"I could speak volumes about the inhuman perversity of the New England weather, but I will give but a single specimen. I like to hear rain on a tin roof. So I covered part of my roof with tin, with an eye to that luxury. Well, sir, do you think it ever rains on that tin? No, sir, skips it every time."

Been reading the thread, seems that maybe someone just starting out here might not do well in this contest. I was thinking about entering a story, BUT. So who votes on the winner? Is it done by the readers?

Yes. Readers vote and the three stories with the highest scores win, excluding those who have won within the last six months. How well you might do is hard to say -- depends on your story, what category it's in, etc.

It's a good way to get your name out in front of more people. A normal story stays on the new story list for three days. A contest story stays on the contest list the whole of the contest.

Plus the story usually posts in less than 12 hours.

Anyway, the more the merrier so jump in with both feet. What do you have to lose?

You write for a catagory ? I thought you wrote to the theme. So you could have say a vampire summer story?

You can write in any category as long as the story is on theme but different categories have different amounts of votes, views, etc and different troll factors among other things.

Classic Twain. Love it.

We've become metal roof converts since moving into our old mill house down south--the roof is now over ninety years old, and still in great shape. Even better, the sounds of summer storms are very handy for covering up noises when the little one is asleep. :D

I have a new story coming out Tuesday, (I hope) about lovin in an old tin roofed hay barn. :D

Tx is right -- so long as the theme of the story is summer, it doesn't matter what category it's in, in terms of entering it. Yes, you can have a vampire summer story. Certain categories such as Erotic Horror, Letters & Transcripts, etc., get less attention from readers. Others like romance, sci-fi, nonhuman, are more popular.

Sigh, vernacular architecture--one of the weirdest things that can get me going.

I'll have to give it a read when it posts.

I thought about changing it from spring to summer but it didn't work as well so....

Hope you enjoy it. i know i did. :D

That last part might be misleading, because the three categories mentioned are not very popular, but they do get less trolling. Even more popular categories are Incest, Anal and First Time. I base that on responses to my stories, whichare in all categories except Illistrated.

Maybe you can have a vampire griping because the daylight hours are longer during the summer, so he or she has less time available.

Maybe I'll try a first time theme instead. Just thought of story, combination of events past.
Thanks again for the advise.:D:)

Ha!

Can you imagine if that poor vamp were stuck up in northern Alaska or something for the summer? Dude would have so little time to feed/fuck. I can see it now: he waits by the door for the sun to go down, races outside for his few precious moments, and then has to scamper back home before the sun rises again.

Given the sexual prowess usually afforded vampires, I would really love the humorous take on the one-minute vampire.

Sorry -- I should have mentioned those categories. I don't read them much or write them, so they tend to slip my mind when discussing categories.

Oh, that is a good and funny idea. :)

some days up there the sun never sets, so you sleep all summer and hunt all winter.

I was glancing at my scores and noticed that previous contest entries have gone higher (score-wise) than they did during the contest. Darn it, where was the love when it mattered the most? LOL!

My first story just posted on Lit and I am so pumped just for that fact that it's out there, that I am definitely going to submit to the contest! I don't even care that I won't win!

That's a good attitude. I remember when I posted my first story and I couldn't believe when over a thousand people read it. I really got pumped up. Best to you in your writing endeavors.

Thanks so much, DG! I appreciate your support! It's been incredible to feel supported by so many here!

Well I went to the pool when perhaps I should have stayed at mom's to write. But, hey, it was a pool. ;) I think tonight or tomorrow I will snag some writing time. I think I have gotten more sun this summer than I have in the last several years... I even have tan lines. Or burn lines, I guess. And yes, I wear sunscreen.

Story is galloping along. It's like some floodgates have opened or something. I'm not complaining.

I have some reservations about a few things in it though, but will wait until I actually finish it to think about them.

I've finished my first (and possibly only) entry! I'm still not done working on it, though, but at least I'll have something to submit no matter what. Right now I'm going through it again for editing. Now to decide whether or not I have time to write up a second entry... Has anyone noticed any correlation between entry date and final score? I doubt it affects things at all, but I'm just so used to submitting at the very beginning...
