 Thought I was in a safe site to bring OpenOffice into my new laptop and now have this damn ALOT fucking malware toolbar added on. GAH! Can't remove it in programs or at manage browser add-ons and my two anti-virus programs can't see it. (avast! & McAfee) What's the magic bullet guys?! Have to go for a while but if you have any ideas it would be appreciated!:kiss:

Maybe you can delete it from that 'add/remove software' spot on the control panel. That works with all the crap yahoo infects your computer with.

I use google chrome and if you go to the wrench icon (tools) a lot of those bastards are hidden under the category called "extensions".

Which browser?

In Firefox try Tools | Add-ons | Extensions and remove it from Firefox.

My add/remove is under programs. Not finding one that is "software" but I know what you mean and it did show up there and I removed it from there but after the restart the toolbar is still there. Thanks

Jiggling commencing...

This might help getting rid of it.

In the future, when installing a program, don't simply click through the install wizard. Read it. There are a few programs that like to add toolbars or some other such nonsense and they have a little box already checked for you.

First off, get NORTONS.

They have added a few new tools.

POWER ERASE is awesome.

or you could use a hammer and stop watching those free porn clips.

What he said. I use a lot of freeware and I use to just click through the install until I started ended up with a bunch of crap tool bars I didn't want. The Adobe flash player updater at times has Norton with it and will install it if you don't uncheck the box.

Or you can bring it to my house and for a small non-monetary compensation I'll fix if fer ya. *wiggles eyebrows and leers*

I knew I could depend on you lovely people.

Wanted to upgrade to Google Chrome anyway so that's done.

Shall carry on with your other ideas now.

Cool. Found this earlier on my own web search on the topic. Will read further down since the basics haven't zapped it so far. And yeah... when installing I didn't just click through but obviously missed the prompt about ALOT.

This IS my new computer! :p There are warnings out in the nets about being sure not to click and use the toolbar.

I've had to use a Mac at a non-profit office that I've worked for and just feel dirty afterwards, but do have the skills if its demanded.

1. If your'e running Windows, make sure you have Security Essentials; if you don't have SE, go to the Microsoft website and download it for free. SE is realtime virus/malware protection.

2. Go here http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp_form, type in a name and email addy to download Malwarebytes free Anti-Malware scanner and removal tool. Any mal/spyware that's ever made it through SE on the computer I use has been caught by MAM. If malware in the form of that toolbar is still residing on your box, MAM will find it so you can then remove it. It sounds pretty easy and the better news is that it is.

3. The best site I've ever come across on the Web for such issues is http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/. You can get free help there for any security issue you many come across, and the site offers such a vast array of info and tutorials on security and other topics that, if one is so inclined, they may become proficient enough in such subjects to start helping others, too.

If your install of OpenOffice also installed a search toolbar you didn't get it from OpenOffice.org.
I'd completely uninstall OpenOffice. Delete any references to it in the registry, delete any directories related to it that the uninstall doesn't delete, delete all your temporary files and anything related to it in your user directory (some directories there are hidden).
Then download and install the proper version from OpenOffice.org
