The Multiple Peonies of Barack Obama

Not many avid gardeners use a pick. :)

I absolutely need a pickaxe if I want to do any gardening in my back yard. (I'm eyerolling at my yard, not your comment.) This house was built on top of a demolished school because it was the 40s or early 50s they did not haul the rubble away, they just built on top of it. The ground is full of bricks - I excavate an average of 3 bricks every time I plant a 2 gallon bucket of flowers. It's actually pretty amazing how the plants are perfectly happy sending out their roots through the various nooks and crannies between bits of rubble. The small animals like field mice, garter snakes, and squirrels seems to like it too: lots of tiny caverns, overhangs, and places to hide.

Artificial sandstone/limestone layer.
