This does not surprise me in the slightest.
Thank goodness I was exposed to other cultures and their methods of childrearing before I had my own kids, else they might have turned out similarly.
As it is, each of my kids were required to do age-appropriate chores as they grew up, and all are now well able to look after themselves.... even the 15 yr old can cook, clean and do his own finances.

There must always be balance between work and play. My kids get no priviliges unless their work is finished. Beck and call is reserved (well, mostly) for the two-year-old as he cannot yet tie his own shoes. The older two are expected to use their own brains.

I've been around to a few places and one thing I've noticed is that families are pretty much the same. Kids are spoiled, parents gave up long ago, etc. You don't see that in the jungle because it's the jungle. You might not see it in France because it's France. Everywhere else though. Japan will try to tell you it isn't there but I've been there and seen their evil spawn. They're among the worst.
