Danish parliament approves equal marriage laws

The Danish parliament has approved equal marriage laws 85 to 24 today, reports said today.

Members of the sole house of the Folketing approved the gender-neutral marriage legislation today after an opposition amendment creating a separate system of marriage for gay couples under different terminology was rejected yesterday.

The new law is due to come into effect on 15 June this year, b.dk reported.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark, to which 80 percent of the Danish population belongs, will be able to perform marriage ceremonies under the new laws. New rites were written up by ten of the Church’s eleven bishops in a spirit of “good cooperation”, Bishop Kjeld Holm said.

Gay couples will be able to marry in churches of their choice but priests will not be obliged to perform weddings. They would, however, need to help the couple find a priest who would marry them at the church under the new laws.

Kim Klaus Wyon-Sergeant, an editor living in Denmark told PinkNews.co.uk: “Members of the Christian Democrats (a party that is not represented in parliament) plan to sue the state, believing that the law infringes on their freedom of religion. However experts say they dont have much of a chance since the law specifically allows ministers of the church to abstain from presiding over same-sex marriages.”

Denmark’s current system of registered partnerships for gay couples was the first of its kind in the world when it was enacted in 1989.

Manu Sareen, the Minister for Equality and Church and Nordic Cooperation in the coalition government of the Social Democrats, Social Liberal Party and Socialist People’s Party said of equal marriage: “It’s liberalism, it’s diversity, it’s equality, it’s tolerance and it’s so beautiful.”

Mr Sareen announced the government’s intention to legalise gay marriages in October last year.

New Rites... oh you mean.. yeah they are probably going to be called "life partners" instead of wife and wife and husband and husband. But then again the wanker bishops (most of them anyway) were against same sex marriage from the beginning. So if you ask me, then call a cock a a cock, and a marriage a marriage. No matter what gender your partner has. If the person is a woman, then it is a wife, if the person is a man then the person is a husband. So basically the priest can declare them for husband and husband and wife and wife. Why is there so much hubbub about two people wanting to get married no matter what gender or sexuality they have.. ?

Exactly, it is fucking Denmark. And the religious right has been going bonkers as fucking usual . And well if you ask me , then I am just a tiny bit proud. That finally Denmark has done just a bit good in comparison to much of the shit that has been going on since last election. But it was about MOTHERFUCKING time that the politicians finally pulled their head out of their arses. Instead of the bollocks the former government did, or didn't do.
But well Helle Thorning-Schmidt doesn't do a lot better than the former arse, that was the prime minister. Anyway good, and also they are luckily not called life partners, as I feared. But husband and husband, and wife and wife. Or legal wedded people. Or something along those lines, just like any other two people who wants to be married. My Danish to English skills are not up to par with my usual self, cause I am writing this post pretty early in the morning. And I am listening to Billy Ocean Loverboy. So I am getting high on music, and cigarettes. And I am taking a break from 420.

But I know JD, just is JD. So nothing there is really that offensive. After all, there are only around 5 to 6 million people living in Denmark, so the Danish population could be in a metropolis , if it ever came down to "survival" of the Danes "Mega City Denmark" lol . But oh well here Etoile is the law LOL

I have two grandparents and one great grandparent who came to the US from Denmark, so I have a strong connection to the country. I only wish the US government would get with the program and get their noses out of the private lives of its citizens when it comes to marriage. You love who you love, and no one should be denied the right to marry whoever they choose.

As far as the need to "grow up", that rests with the person who made the ignorant remark, not those who took offense to it.

I so much agree, and if I could do it without consequences, I would occupy the hearts and minds of the people who are so damn nosy of peoples private lives. Because I am so filled with love and positive energy, that I can not say anything but damn. I so much agree with you Since I can really not see , what is so wrong with a man loving a man and a woman loving a woman, and they want to commit their love to each other at an altar ? "God" has never said anything bad about love, it is the humans who has.

As I said before, JD is just JD. And I can handle JD, after all I have been a member of this forum for about 7 years, and yesterday I just had the BEST birthday (my 30.) ever ! So that gives me strength too, to get moving and take the blows as they come. Since I have had my fair share of fights with people on this forum over the years. But I have also met and gotten some of the best friends from this place, and since she is not posting (she is probably pretty busy "being the law" ). Then I must say even now Etoile is one moderator that I admire , even to this day.
