With a final vote of 52-47, Republicans blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act

Once again, the Republicans are showing American women that the GOP is not concerned with ideas of fundamental fairness and equality.

What is the Republican excuse to continue un-equal pay for equal work ?

Who was cheering, when they heard the words, "the legislation would impose too much of a burden on employers and spawn frivolous lawsuits" ?

Mikulski Statement on Republican Filibuster of Paycheck Fairness Act

June 5, 2012

WASHINGTON – Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), Dean of the Senate women, made the following statement today.

Why? The bill was voted on, according to party lines. Republicans unanimously blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Legislation that Sen. Barbara Mikulski introduced to help close the wage gap for women:

"Although we lost the vote today, we're not going to give up the battle. While it is a sad day here in the U.S. Senate.

It's an even sadder day each day a woman earns less than a man doing the same job with the same education.

"It's unfortunate that today's vote occurred strictly along party lines. It's my hope that we can bring this bill up again and forge a bipartisan vote.

"As we come up on the 49th anniversary of equal pay for equal work, we're not going to let this bill die because of parliamentary entanglements.

The majority should rule in the United States Senate.

"While John Adams and all the guys were in Philadelphia writing the U.S. Constitution, his wife Abigail wrote him a letter that said,
'Do not forget the ladies or they will foment a revolution of their own.'"Well, they did forget the ladies. And the ladies did foment
a revolution of their own. It was called the suffrage movement. It took 150 years for women to secure the right to vote.

"And now they've forgotten the ladies again by not getting rid of the loopholes in the Equal Pay Act that are making it hard to end pay discrimination.

But we're not going to wait another 49 years.

"So, I say to the women of America, let's keep this fight going. Put on your lipstick, square your shoulders, suit up.

And let's fight for this new American Revolution where women get equal pay for equal work.

Let's end wage discrimination in this century once and for all."

You could turn around and write every woman in america a check for 10m and they would still bitch and complain.

Black man in the white house.....somehow black people are still oppressed and unfairly treated.

We could have a house/senate comprised 100% of minority females.....they will still be oppressed...

and somehow this is all 100% the fault of the white male....

I'm all for fair pay but a program to teach females how to ask for a raise? GTFO....

Sounds like someone want's a job teaching that class...follow the money$$$

Being deliberately facetious is a great invisible knapsack of privilege to fall back on as a white male, isn't it?

I've actually fallen in love with that meme of black president=equality in America. If it worked like that shouldn't we have declared racism over when Micheal Jackson (was still black) and the most beloved person on the planet and one of the richest as well?

I'm not being facetious....serious as a heart attack, and I'm not white moron.

I'm calling bullshit where I see it. Of all the EO/FP/AA laws on the books you show me where it's not already illegal to discriminate against minorities and females.

Someone wants money out of the gov....that's what this legislation is about. If that is not what it is about it's saying women are to stupid to figure out how to ask for a raise without a government mandated/provided class that I'm sure does not have an inflated price tag.

Name one way a minority/female is oppressed under the law in the US.

Find me a piece of (active) legislation that prevents women/minorities from having the same opportunities as everyone else.

Quot it and post it or you are full of fucking shit...

Go....

Well, I didn't call you a white moron, but...what you wrote is incredibly close to kindergarten logic if it ain't exactly that. If you truly believe there's still no inequity of payscale between the genders and that things are all kosher in society because of some "hey, the top basketball player in the NBA is black and it used to be all white, so now there's no more racism" way of thinking, then I wanna come live where you live. Because Smurf Village ain't cutting it.

I remember when Michael Jackson was arraigned in LA on molestation charges, there were mass street-rallies in his support in LA -- and in Mexico City, Moscow and Beijing!

Nancy Pelosi, a woman, DEFENDED paying women less for congressional jobs (where on average they make $6,500 less then men) saying that "it is a different world"

Your venom towards Republicans is too narrowly focused. Could it be possible that this piece of legislation is not really needed and is just a political ploy (like so many other pieced of "signature legislation")? There are laws on the books that anyone can use to sue for discrimination of pay/work/etc why do we need another?

this is complete horse shit.

here is a simple concept, not every worker is worth the same value.

second simple concept, there are bad people out there. get over it and find a new job

More money...wtf did I say!!! And the only thing I knew about it was what I herd nancy pelosi talking about on the news about how it would provide women with class's on how to ask for a raise (which I'm sure are priced fairly ) Fair pay act my ass....

Tell me how giving 10,600 bucks a year to everyone born with a XX chromosome will fix wage discrimination?

157 million women in the us according to 2010 census so

1.57x10 8(1.06 x 10 4) = 1.6642x10 to the 12th!!! $$ somehow = equality....please explain...because I don't fucking get it.

Why not just enforce the EO/FP/AA laws already there?

My grandmother used those laws to start a construction company and become a fucking millionaire back in the late 70's.....is there some new laws preventing women from doing that today?

I still want someone, anyone to post one law/loop hole currently on the books that allows discrimination against minorties or females.

This is why we need to vote Vetteman for 12! He'll make sure every woman is paid in their fair amount of cans of corn.

Come on America, it's time to show what women are truly worth!

what America needs is another crap law that will fuel more frivolous lawsuits

FUCK LAWSUITS!! it's 1.6 TRILLION dollars a year we don't have to spend......

They need to learn how to ask for a raise, start their own company or beat the fuck out of their company with the EO/FP/AA laws already on the books just like everyone else. I have seen women doing it my entire life much to their success.

16 billion a year will NOT stop discrimination....16 trillion wont either. Just another typical liberal solution...problem? throw money at it = win...

Look, if we start paying women what they're worth, we won't get any more blowjobs.

::d&r::

I read an article the other day reporting that more women are paying alimony now in US Divorces. How can that be if they are not paid fairly?

Ask yourself several simple questions: If the legislation passed, would there be mass lawsuits? How would companies prove in a court that a woman is being paid what they are worth? How will women prove in a court that they are underpaid?

ask yourself this....does that really have anything to do with this legislation?

or is it the 1.6 trillion a year in welfare alone (not to mention educational programs) they want? hmmmmmmmm....no way it's the money right? ;)

Keep in mind if they are discriminated against they can sue the shit out of their company as it already is.

Face it, y'all...it's FUCKING GREAT not having been born with a vagina!!!

WOO-HOO!!! So much shit I don't have to deal with or have to think about automatically...my wages, periods and pregnancy fears, pussy maintenance, buying bras, hairdos, shoes, etc...

It is...but being a woman comes with it's own set of perks. Just not 1.6 trillion of them a year...not today anyhow :p

Edit: you still can't come up with 1 bit of legislation on the books that allows discrimination against females and minorities can you? Nor explain how 1.6 trillion a year in welfare checks alone will end discrimination. Because this whole outcry about fairness is a crock of shit and you know it.

As a woman, I'd be okay with the failure of this law if they passed a bill making all salaries and salary structures public within the company. That would expose a hell of a lot more than simple gender equality, I think.

THIS!!

This would be a REAL fairness act.

1.6 trillion a year...pffft..gimme a fucking break..

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday condemned companies that pay women less than men, but was unwilling to condemn Senate Democrats who pay their female staffers less than male staffers, saying that the Senate is “another world.”

Speaking in Washington, D.C., Pelosi reminded everyone that there shouldn’t be income disparity between men and women.

“It’s 2012. It’s 2012, everybody. What is it we’re talking about women getting paid less? Are you going home to your little girls each day and saying: ‘Work hard, study hard, be diligent so that when you grow up you can make less than your brother?”

She added, “There seems to be a decision somewhere in some companies and parts of our economy that that’s an okay thing to do.”

BUT

According to publicly available salary data at the website Legistorm, Pelosi’s female employees earned an average annual salary of $96,394 in fiscal year 2011. Male employees earned $123,000 on average, a difference of 27.6 percent.

The gap is even larger if calculated using the median salaries for men and women. For Pelosi’s female employees, the median annual salary was $93,320 in 2011, compared to $130,455 for male employees—a difference of $37,135, or 40 percent.

Pelosi’s entire staff—men and women—earned an average annual salary of $108,150 and a median salary of $114,662. By both measures, women made considerably less.

I'm fine with this. I doubt it'll ever happen but still.
