Looking for the categories ''pecking order"?

I seem to remember it being mentioned somewhere, in terms of what specific things trump what when figuring out which category a story would sit best in? I can't seem to find anything...help?

For example: if a story potentially contains biting (the non-vampire kind!), light bondage, blindfolding, etc but the characters develop some feelings for each other, would it survive in Romance, or would it need to hang a left at BDSM or something similar?

I'm not particularly keen to drop it into the Erotic Couplings melting pot, unless that's really the only choice...

Go with BDSM, romance is acceptable there, but biting and bondage is not necessarily well received in romance. Erotic couplings is a kind of catch all and you have BDSM specifics.

A rule of thumb is whatever the main "kink" to a story is, go with it.

Another thing to know is that Incest trumps every thing. No matter what else is in the story if there is incest that's where it goes.

Gay male is along those lines as well.

That's not entirely correct. Celebrity tops anything else. If there is a celeb involved in the story, wherever you want to send it, it will go to the Celebrity category.

Even if it's a novel about the Olsen twins having a lesbian affair, it would go to Celeb.

It seems to me that it might be easier to write for a category rather than try to fit a story to one after the fact, which is proving a bit awkward.

I've seen a lot of the comments about 50 Shades (have only read the first few pages on a Kindle sample...not sure I need to go further), and how it's not 'real' bdsm.

But what really constitutes that? Is it more the difference between someone writing about something they know vs making it up? I'd be hesitant to post something in bdsm if it's just going to be shot down as not 'real' bdsm because it doesn't follow some formula and the 'rules'.

The lines seem to be blurring more and more these days. Other than a few bites and a blindfold, my stuff is mainly just psychological...but where else would it fit?

That's a good way to look at it. The only problem is that the only thing we like more than binaries (yes or no, black or white, chocolate or vanilla) is hierarchies.

When Bdsm is done right it is as much if not more psychological than physical. I think its your category for this

I've read a lot in the Romance category over the years, and as long as there is a really strong romantic bent to a story I've seen everything from bondage to exhibitionism to who knows what. Incest, gay sex, foot fetish, no...those are pretty clear deal-breakers.

It's when you get into areas like D/s-style humiliation vs Exhibitionism/Voyeurism, or forceful Dominant+reluctant submissive vs Non-consent/Reluctance. If there aren't any whips, corsets, nipple clamps, paddles, chastity belts or dungeons involved...who's to say?

Maybe you just post it where your friends read stuff? (note to self: make friends)

I have now given up on any real answer and gone with the ever-dependable eenie-meenie-miny-moe approach

Write in whatever cat in which you feel like writing. If it's appreciated by the readers, they'll find you, regardless.

Not sure it was in the end. Got some lovely comments from a few people, but after some initial nice votes, it's getting voted lower and lower.

I hope you know Management will put a story in whatever category they think it belongs. If you object, you can tell them, and they might change it but don't count on it. Authors sugest categories, and usually they are accepted, but not always.
