The 'Julia' Backlash: Because Americans Like to Pretend They Don't Need Government

Foreign aid has been overdone, but that's true of many countries. Israel is just one of them. I can see why we've done it, but I don't agree with it.

You'd be in the minority around here. Btw, I wouldn't call anything to do with Israel foreign aid.

The sick thing is that we often fund both sides of a war. Iran-Iraq, anyone?

Sometimes rich donors will fund both candidates in an election so that no matter who wins, the winner will owe them. Same thinking, perhaps?

Aid to Israel is like funding the police department, when 99% of foreign aid is like funding organized crime.

To me 'aid' infers supporting the basic necessities for life - not underwriting the military might of Israel.

Unfortunately for us and them miltary and financial aid is a basic necessity for sustaining their existence.

Bullshit.

Well, it was true once, at any rate. But I don't think Israel has a single neighbor left who seriously wants to invade/destroy the Zionist Entity, any more, that's all just red-meat political rhetoric for home consumption. (Yes, even in Iran.) And the governments of all of Israel's neighbor-states have more urgent domestic priorities this year, anyway, like, survival. And the Israelis don't need any foreign aid to deal with the Palestinians.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map. Just sayin'. I'm not for interventionism, though....just for giving the Mossad the green light to kick some ass and take some names.

When the Muslim Brotherhood completely overruns Egypt (as it is doing), the Mossad will have even more work to do.

Why is it the US government's job to get involved in a middle-east religious conflict?

Iranian politicians threats to "wipe Israel off the map" (which is technically an urban legend) are as common as Tea Party promises to reduce the size of government. Lots of jawboning, no action.

The Muslim brotherhood may just "overrun" Egypt but there is no chance that the Egyptian military will take ANY action against Israel. The Egyptian military is virtually 100% funded by the United States government and the military made it very clear to everyone in the country early on that absolutely nothing is going to interrupt that gravy train.

It's not. Just sit back, eat popcorn, and get out of Israel's way. That's all Jerusalem really wants. For us to get out of their way. Think Bibi wants us holding his hand? I think not.

Of course, if we had left them alone in '53 to '54, Mossadegh, Iran would be a lot different place and so would the Middle East. Talk about blowback.

Assuming that they use common sense. Let's hope they do.

As for Iran, only its mullahs can keep things even partially sane. If they unleash their attack dog/puppet President, then it's a different matter. You're expecting rational behavior. I'm hoping to be proven wrong here.

You really believe that Israel wants us to "get out of their way"?

Does that involve ending funding for their military?

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any Israli representative willing to let go of the cash cow that is US tax payer dollars...

He who pays the piper calls the tune. I think that Bibi is tired of us calling his tune.

But I'm willing to experiment by cutting off all foreign aid to the Middle East and seeing exactly what happens.

Back on topic.....what amount of government is good? That's the real, nuts and bolts issue. Unlike Sev, I don't reject the State. I just want to set the right boundaries. I favor a somewhat more left-leaning version of the present American Union, with constitutional revision as necessary to achieve this.

Basically, we'd be happier if we resembled Canada a little more.

And you have the ability to call those shots?
