Zoey Ripple, a recent graduate at Colorado University, was shot for 'wandering' into a couple's home and their bedroom.

Seriously? How in the fuck can you be so intoxicated, that you do not know you are in a strange house? How did Zoey get there in the first place? Where were her friends to stop her?

Granted, Ms. Ripple is not a hardened criminal with criminal intent, but how can someone be that dumb? Fortunately, for Zoey, the married couple that shot her quickly realized she was not a criminal and dialed 911 for help. The couple has not been charged, but Zoey faces felony trespassing charges.

Kind of reminds of one time when I was much younger. I had spent the afternoon drinking and was walking to the bus stop to go home. I was walking through a strip mall and for some reason I decided to start knocking over tables and chairs on the sidewalk in front of a small restaurant. The manager comes out and yells at me, and I start cursing at him and then start running off yelling about something. Further on there was a police station on the way to the bus stop and I go to the door for some reason deciding to turn myself in for knocking over the tables. By this time it must have been getting late into the evening already and the station was locked up so I rang the after hours bell. A cop comes to the door and I start demanding he arrest me for knocking over tables. He told me to get lost and closed the door in my face. It was freaking hilarious in retrospect.

Dude, I have really done some stupid shit when drunk. I have a long list from my drinking days. Like the time I waltzed into an IHOP wondering how Pizza Hut had changed its' decor so quickly from the day before? But I KNEW I was NOT in a Pizza Hut. Or the time I fell into a muddy ditch 2 doors down from my house and was cursing the city for putting it there. Or the time I left a group of friends to go potty, and then went to the other side of the bar to a different group (I could have sworn they left me behind) wondering wtf was in that last drink?

As a home owner, I am not in favor of pressing felony charges against the college girl. Nor do the couple who own this house want to press charges. However, I totally understand it from a prosecutor's pov.

Why the fuck wasn't their front locked? An unlocked door is an invitation to be robbed, raped and murdered. Zoey was definitely wrong for walking into their house, and they had a right to shoot her, but if they had locked their door she would have either knocked on it, or left and would not have been shot.

My mom told me years and years ago about a time when they were living in a subdivision where all the houses were identical and a drunk guy started coming in, insisting it was his house. This was back in the early 60's.
She said it was more funny than anything because he was really really really drunk.

When I was a kid in the 70s, this drunk old man started pounding on the door and screaming that we let him in. My dad confronted him and learned the old man had lived there many years before.

The funniest thing I remember about that night was my dad telling him,"If you lived in this house, I can understand why you are drunk."

There is no real crime where I live. We don't even have police anymore. I don't lock doors and many of my neighbors don't. Cars are left unlocked routinely. No theft, no burglary, certainly no shootings or assault or murder. Our crimes are drunk driving, domestic abuse and low level drugs.
This is common for the whole area not just my town.

OMG, are you serious? If you do something bad and something bad happens to you ITS YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT. Drinking may be legal but if you choose to do it you are entirely responsible if something bad happens to you. Fortunately no one but the drunk was harmed in this case.

That the deal. We allow people to do alot things that they shouldn't be doing, but they have to take responsibility when something happens. Putting an intoxicating substance into one's body to derive pleasure is a choice and the person doing it bares complete responsibility if something is to happen.

I feel zero sympathy if someone falls off a balcony when drunk, gets an STD from promiscious sex, dies in a recreational parachuting accident. They made the behavioral choice and have to live (or die) with the consequences, assuming hopefully they don't harm anyone else.

And this goes for me as well if I choose to do a dangerous or morally questionable recreational activity.
