Marvel's Avengers' Movie!

:D I had a rip-roaring good time! :D

What can I say? You will feel like you're twelve again: happy, excited, delighted and jubilant with what you' see. As a Marvel girl I read the Avengers back in my wayward youth and never imaged they'd be able to pull off the comic as a movie (hell, I'm amazed they pulled off Thor!). I especially never thought they'd pull it off with the original group (Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man), I remember wincing when I heard they were going to do that and thought "no way. Bad idea. They're gong to look stupid." But son-of-a-bitch if they didn't pull it off and pull it off spectacularly well!

Action sequences are exciting if a bit too long (the movie is 2 and 1/2 hours and you know it--in a good way. You get your money's worth). The characters each have their own style of combat which is fun to watch, and also do clever things. I had none of those hated, frustrating moments where I felt like yelling at the screen "Why don't they just...?!?"or "Jeezus no! This character's so stupid!" Usually, what the heroes did, individually and together, surprised me and I loved that. Awesome dialogue and banter, cool machines and devices, respectable bad guy.

Each character gets their time on screen and makes the most of it; each maintains their well defined roles from their own movies. Each has layers, great lines, heart. And, most astonishingly given the really bad couple of Hulk movies...they finally got the Hulk right. And I say this as one who has never liked that character (Bill Bixby's take on Bruce "David" Banner, yes, but never the raging, smashing Hulk). Yet, damn, if you don't like both sides of that character this time around. Mark Ruffalo, the third actor to try his hand playing Bruce Banner on film, got it brilliantly right. He radiates sad humor, quiet intelligence, private misery, cynical acceptance, all with a dash of Bill Bixbyish decent-human-being élan. And our CGI Hulk not only seems like he's there with the other actors (rather than in his own video game) but has expressions you can identify with and understand. You really get that he's the embodiment of that "I just want to smash something..." anger we all sometimes feel. Our "I'm pissed!" side.

So, color me green and/or impressed on that alone. And Scarlett Johannson, who I also had doubts about--I feared, thanks to Iron Man 2 :p that she wasn't going to be much of a character, nor stand out--was a great Black Widow. They not only gave the character depth and personality, but also a unique talent, one that makes her feel equal in usefulness to the other superheroes. She also fights like the character in the comic! (nice when those making such superhero movies cherry-pick the right stuff from the comics and not only make it work, but stay true to the character).

High marks, and high recommendation. Director, writers, actors, special effects company, all worked hard to do this well and do it right. You will have fun. :cattail:

Glad it was well done. As I mentioned in another thread, my store has made me to bitter to give marvel any of my money (although I admittedly have no issue buying and selling their back issues on e-bay to make money)

Scarlet Johannson looks damn hot, but not enough to make me see it.

I also vowed to never support Robert Downey Junior either so I'll sit this one out-the wife is going however, so I'll hear more than I want to about it, I'm sure.

I want to see this movie and the main reason is: Joss Whedon, although the cast is a close second. Plus I like fun movies. Glad to hear it's fun. I'll probably have to wait until it's On Demand or something, but looking forward to it nonetheless.

When you said the "Avengers", I thought you were talking about the descendants of John Steed, Mrs Peel and so on, not a comic !

going tomorrow. very excited, like any self respecting geeky girl would be. :D

They made that movie years ago, and from what I heard, it was ... bad.

Oh, yeah. I received a copy of that movie on VHS tape as a gift when it came out. I watched the first half, rewound it, and then recorded a football game over it that I also never watched.

Here Here! except I'm currently on issue four of the new Steed and Mrs. Peel comic book now!

true...but they made an incredible series decades before that! Love Diana Rigg!

Diana Rigg (at the risk of diverting the thread) was the best Bond girl. :) Haven't seen the series, though.

no argument here but I do have a fondness for Jane Seymour as well! If you can find them the series is really good, quirky to say the least.

I should be seeing it with my buddy Phil tomorrow. I can't wait. Although he wants to see it later than I want to so that he can watch a hockey game (I think he was talking about hockey)...

I'm sure I'd enjoy them. I did pick up the entire run of "The Prisoner," though. I probably shouldn't have, but... :D

Is Phil a Caps' or Rangers' fan? And if the latter, lie and tell me he's a Caps' fan. ;)

In my earlier post I was going to mention that Avengers is very much in the Prisoner ilk, but I think the Avengers was the more popular of the two, anyway but great shows. ( There was also a continuation of the Prisoner done in comic form that was very impressive.)

That's kind of what I was hoping for when I saw the announcement of a new Avengers movie. Hot damn, Mrs. Peel, I thought. Real comedown when it turned out to be a Marvel comix flick.

Um, guys, I'm all for lionizing Diana Rigg and the Avengers television series, but do you really need to jack my thread to do that? Can't you create your own in which to reminisce?

And I apologize for not titling this thread "MARVEL's Avengers" which might have saved us all from this tragic error in mistaken cultural icons.

Same here. I'm a little bit of a comic book fan, but only a little. The superhero superteams have always struck me as more geek than I can handle. But Joss Whedon at the helm? I'm on board.

Speaking of which, did anyone else see (and love) Cabin in the Woods?

I've been waiting for about 30 years for an Avengers film. I figured I could wait a few more days to see it on my own schedule, but then I looked at Facebook for like twenty seconds today and started coming across friends posting one-liners, which immediately pissed me off. So I went and saw it right after work rather than have more of it spoiled.

I have nothing but praise. It's wonderful. Every character was nailed, the dialogue and tone were great, and there were LOLz. So. Many. LOLz.

Stay all the way through the credits. There are two post-movie scenes. You'll think you've seen the post-movie scene, but wait for it, 'cause there's a second.

Keeping a thread totally on track is like herding cats. It just ain't going to happen. :D

I trust Whedon to tell a good story and even his failures (Dollhouse) are interesting. Haven't seen Cabin yet, but it's on the list.

Cabin is very good, but best enjoyed as what it is rather than what people try to read into it.

Avengers is so amazing I'm having a hard time believing it came out of Hollywood. Did Whedon keep all the meddling shit-for-brains execs locked away in a room somewhere until the film was finished? :D.

I doubt Joss had anything to do with it. Whoever is behind the Marvel movies is responsible as they've been doing it for most of the films (alas, not all!). They pick the right director (trustworthy, knows and loves the material, etc.) and writers for the "comic" and then let them run without interference--outside, I assume, of whatever boundaries they set up beforehand to keep the character true to character like costumes, etc.

They have, effectively, kept the Hollywood executives out of the creative process and off the set and allowed the Director and writers do their job.

They did this for Ironman 1 (a winner!), Thor (a winner!), for Captain America (a real winner!) for X-Men First Class (wow!), and now for Avengers. If they maintain this formula and don't give into temptation to fiddle, they could continue this amazing winning streak.

When comic book superhero movies are made by fanboys - Joss Whedon and John Fabreau the two with the most experience in directing and/or writing - the movies are more than likely top notch. I can't wait to see it, though I will be watching it alone: My wife and son yawn at the thought of it.

The British tv series Avengers' movie, with Ralf Fines and Uma Thurman in the leads, SUCKED!!!

They made that movie years ago, and from what I heard, it was ... bad.

The Avengers movie (Mrs. Peel) was terrible, but it was still better than Korman's FF4

Real comedown when it turned out to be a Marvel comix flick.

May you die in the fire of one thousand suns. :D

Don't apologize to them. They don't know what they are missing.

I've been waiting for about 30 years for an Avengers film. .

About 20ish for me. Technically, we are still waiting, since the movie is based on the Ultimates Universe (Earth 1610), but the 'essence' is still there based on the other movies so far.

I doubt Joss had anything to do with it. Whoever is behind the Marvel movies is responsible as they've been doing it for most of the films (alas, not all!). Avi Arad, CEO of Marvel Entertainment Studios and Arad Productions, is primarily responsible for the awesomeness. He's been on every film since the first X-men. He picks the directors and the writers and the source material. This includes animation as well.

Stan Lee consults on all Marvel Studios Productions, ever. This includes the original Spider-man movie and the original Captain America movie.

Joe Quesada created the Ultimates Universe that Thor, Iron Man, Cap, and the FF4 movies sourced from. He and John Romita JR wrote Ultimate Spider Man which Sam Raimi's films were based off of.

Arad was also responsible for the Ang Lee Hulk movie (which was waaaaay better than that Edward Norton one, except for Braniac).

I'm going on Tuesday to see the Avengers. This thread just made me smile.

having just seen it, I must say... Joss Whedon is my hero. awesome doesn't even begin to describe it.
