Okay, this is a porn board. However, even porn writers need to upgrade their computers, from time to time. Then comes the problem of moving the files from your previous computer, to your new computer. The company that sold me a computer was willing to help me move my files. The help wasn't much. Local computer shops were willing to do the work, for a large fee. I was a computer programmer and I figured out how to do it, simple, cheap and easy.
I wrote a document that tells all (shameless plug). http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007ZUU184.
Best of all, you can PM me if you have a question.

Thank you!

There's a thread at the top of the forum for published books marketing, RR (as you well know).

If he's feeling fair today, Lovecraft will be along in a couple of hours to ream you for posting this in the AH as well. Gross self-promotion, you know.

Um... DVD-Rs are like 50 cents. That's 4 gigs per DVD. Not to mention, a tb external HDs are like $50.

Why would you have had a problem moving files? As a programmer, wouldn't you have had everything on some form of a back-up anyway?

Not to mention: Flash drives, CD-Rs, Network transfers, Zips, or a tape back-up. Seriously, even Google gives you 8 free gigs of online storage.

Plus, any programs you intend to use from one PC to the next would have to be re-installed to prevent registry or 'no object' errors.

This is a waste of 99 cents, and anyone who pays for it deserves to lose all of their data.

Every time I've bought a computer the store offered to mirror the files on my old computer to my new one for no extra charge -- even when my old computer had died, they switched disks with one of theirs and mirrored it anyway. They did the same thing the time I bought a new, larger hard drive for my same old computer.

Where do you buy your computers -- off the back of a truck?

A DVD transfer works, if your old computer has a DVD write program and your new computer can read the old computer DVDs. Yes, there are several way that you can do the transfer, provided that you know how. Not everyone does.

As to a free transfer of old files to a new computer, you must be very lucky. The shops in my area charge for the transfer. The charge is something like a third of the cost of a new, budget computer.

Actually, I bought my computer from a nationally known operation, over the Internet. The computer works well, their fikle transfer, not so well.

Fikle transfer is always difficult.

~smile~

Does your method work on all Windows systems? You might add that info to your description.

I have bought from a local bricks and mortar company that has been selling and servicing computers and high-end electronics for over fifteen years. I've been doing business with them almost as long as they've been open.

I may pay a few dollars more originally, but it more than balances out when one considers the little extra services they provide. Also, they make sure to tout me toward good equipment, because they know they will see it back in the shop if they sell me a lemon.

Those nation-wide, high end, deep discount, only in cyberspace, big box stores may sell you a bargain, but then again, maybe not. They are popular because they save money -- mostly for their operator.

And I'm just old enough to appreciate dealing eye-to-eye with a salesperson who doesn't need to run the bar code to tell me what's in the box.

Now see, I saw this earlier, was going to mention the authors and their books thread, but was looking quickly and saw the first part of your post and left it alone.

Now I'm home and am actually reading the posts and saw the rest.

So yes, this would be better placed in the authors and their book threads, because its a book being hawked.

And I'll go further,

@ R. Richard, I think one link to your amazon page and one link to your smashwords page would do, rather than that long list of links.

Feel better SR? I feel that was quite fair.

I don’t normally post notice of my books as general posts in the AH. However, ‘Moving Files To A New Computer’ isn’t really a book, but a how to manual. People who aren’t currently interesting in a book, might be interested in a how to manual, that could save them money and aggravation.

I don’t know all of the details about using my method with older Windows operating systems. I’m currently trying to interest people who do have the older Windows operating systems to test my method, so that I might expand my manual.

I currently have five publishers. As can be easily determined, I only list my Club Lighthouse, World Audience and Amazon books in my signature line. I don’t currently list my Smashwords books, as most of them are rewrites of stories previously published in Literotica. I am, however, adding new, never previously published material and I may revise my signature line. I do list my ‘Second Chance’ series books, so that those interested know the order of the books in the series.

There are a number of methods of moving files from an old computer to a new computer. I feel the method that I describe in ‘Moving Files To A New Computer’ is a quick, cheap, reliable method, that also offers some future advantages.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Seriously?

This thread is now officially "The worst thread ever" due purely to the degree of bullshit involved in the text within.
