How much does the distributor of a news story matter to you? Notice I don't say "source" of a story, because the source is whoever the reporter got their information from, not who the reporter works for.

Conservative, liberal, in between, there are all sorts of news distributors, and I think it's safe to say that "mainstream" news (i.e. network TV/major newspaper) has been outdone by bloggers and whatnot enough times by now to say that the mainstream media no longer has the monopoly on what's relevant or completely factual.

So is there any distributor whose word you take as gospel? How easily are you swayed by the political leaning of a distributor when it comes to the story? Do you look at the source?

Most important, have you ever found yourself on the wrong wide of an issue because you'd trusted the distributor due to their supposed political leaning, be it the NYT or the Daily Mail?

Wondering in Wasilla,

Do you mean wire services like AP

Or are you reffering to the actual newspaper like USA Today?

Either way between the editor, reporter, publisher, and God knows who else the story is spun so much that it bears little resemblance to the truth. Not to mention the way stories get sensationalized especially on TV.

I remember the bomb that went off at the Atlanta Olympics. I was in a motel after a day of training for my new job. I was channel surfing, and came across the local news. On one channel the reporter stated Richard Jewel Had Not had training in explosives while in the military, or in law enforcement. I changed the channel and another reporter who had come from the same press conference with the ATF said Jewel had extensive training in explosives while in the military and on the was assigned to the bomb squad on his last job as a police officer

So I find the news about as trustworthy as I find certain peoples claims on this forum.

I was reading a book two weeks ago about Berlesconi where the American author (with obvious deep roots in Italy) was concluding his book (as he began it in the forward) with a rant against Rush Limbaugh and FOX News pining for the good old days of the fairness doctrine and reporting from the Left, because even though the news was slanted, it was complete and if you just read long enough and hard enough you would find enough information to bolster your differing opinion.

Me? I judge the source a lot for it seems the appearance of Rush and FOX have given reporters then general sense that now lack of objectivity on their part is actually restoring the balance.

So much of it has become editorial in nature that it's all pretty much blogging.

Welcome to ignore.

I get all my news on-line... APA kinda ground it into me that all other media is dieing, that you need at least 3 credible sources, etc. But I tend to call "bullshit" on pretty much anything, because I'm a whiney bitch. I do sometimes have that self-serving bias, whatwith the being human and all, where I'm like, "Well... that seems true. I mean, it makes sense. And the source is someone smarter then me." And then I get to be wrong and look like a dumbass because I didn't research it enough.

The Federal Labor Department classifies NEWS in the entertainment industry. That is, news reporters are tossed in the same tank with clowns, lapdancers, and banjo players.

The memoirs of H.L.Mencken and Kenneth Roberts confirm that reporters invent news, and share what they invent with other reporters desperate for stories. Its childs play to roost on a bar stool and concoct a tale about the homeless guy helping a tourist get her car started.

Doesn't anyone monitor this place and simply remove spammers?
And if not, why not?

I'm asking you because, well, it's you.
